Let's get one thing out of the way before we get started. The McGriddle will always be the king of the fast food breakfast sandwiches.
Among sandwiches that don't include built-in pockets of maple syrup, Taco Bell's Biscuit Taco isn't a bad option.
We know what you're thinking. "But it's a taco, not a sandwich!" Well, the Biscuit Taco is pretty much a taco in name only.
If you're familiar with the basic concepts of tacos and biscuits, then you probably realize that a doughy biscuit isn't going to easily fold into a taco shape.
Within a bite or two, what was once (allegedly) a "taco," is now really just a semicircle of a biscuit sandwich with some crumbs in your lap that once represented the connecting portion of the "taco." So yeah, we're considering it a sandwich.
Now that we've confirmed it's a sandwich, the Biscuit Taco really isn't bad. While the biscuit is a little dry, the sausage, egg, and cheese variety was better than similar breakfast options from other fast food restaurants.
The ground bacon was rather unexciting, and neither Taco Bell we visited was able to supply us with the chicken variety (one claimed they didn't have them yet and the other couldn't find them on the menu), but the replacement for the Waffle Taco seems to have found a slightly more conservative, and possibly longer lasting, approach to breakfast.
The most impressive thing about the Biscuit Taco is perhaps what it lacks. Unlike the A.M. Crunchwrap, and just about everything else on the Taco Bell menu, the Biscuit Taco doesn't contain much of that signature Taco Bell taste loosely based on Mexican food and regret.
If you're looking for a breakfast option at Taco Bell that doesn't reek of a series of bad decisions, the Biscuit Taco might be just what you need to kick off your day.
