Fathers Day
 [ LOCAL MUSIC NEWS ]

If you have Daddy issues of your own, consider checking out Fathers Day, a local punk band comprised of four distinct "fathers" including Single Dad, Psycho Ex-Military Dad, Golf Dad and Business Dad. The group sings about everything from anal sex to divorce, and seeing them might just make you thankful for your own parental unit. This Tuesday, October 26 at The Trunk Space in Phoenix, the group kicks off their West coast tour in style, debuting new songs from their new album, including 'Dad Deserves the Breast' and a Sheriff Joe-themed song. In addition to the new tunes, the group has new T-shirts for sale. Beware of standing still at the show – the band is known for physically moving people in the audience while they're singing about dad-ly things like sports, dogs and boobs. They also might teach you a life lesson or two and maybe build some character. Who knows if this was Single Dad's idea, but the show is a Ladies Night theme, which means women get in free before 8 p.m. For everyone else, the cost is $5. You can preview the band's tracks at www.myspace.com/fathersday.

Jack Maverik is turning 29, and, like any good promoter, he's throwing himself a big birthday bash. The venue where he’s working, Long Wong's in Tempe, is hosting a two-day-long fiesta, with performances by everyone from Japhy's Descent and Underground Cities to The Sugar Thieves. This isn't the first time The Mav has celebrated with live music--he's also thrown parties at Anderson's Fifth Estate and Last Exit. This time around, though, he made sure to include musicians who he felt were both talented performers and kind-hearted people. Considering he sees about 15 bands a week, you can be safely assume these are some of the best music makers in the Valley. The best part, besides getting to see Maverik's awesome mustache, might be that both shows on Friday, October 22 and Saturday, October 23 are free. They're also all-ages, and all the info can be found at www.longwongstempe.com.

Get a taste for old school blues and mouthwatering barbecue, this Saturday, October 23 as Hank Tomlin and the Tom Cats take over Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que at Tempe Marketplace. The three-piece blues, swing and rockabilly band is fronted by an Arizona Blues Hall of Famer (Tomlin) and since forming in March they’ve mastered a few old standards and written a few originals. The band prides itself on engaging the audience, not simply playing in front of them, and things get even more intimate at this show since it's in the restaurant's lounge, with music piped throughout the entire space. The concert, which starts at 7 p.m., is free, and you can check out the band at www.meowbaby.com.

Local blogger/rocker/man about town Dfactor has been busy with his recently-formed power-pop trio, which plays the Rogue Bar in Scottsdale this Friday, October 22. The band hopes to get some new recording done soon so they can release a follow-up to his one-man-band record, 2009’s 'Slashing the Sunlight.' They’ll debut two new songs at the show, one the band calls “a flat-out punk rocker” and another they say is a “creamy pop tart lullaby.” Expect a very energetic set from the guys, who all sing so they can spread the energy around. The band plays with Ribbons and Jackson Dife. The 21-and-older concert is $5. The action starts at 8 p.m., and more info may be found at http://listn.to/Dfactor.

If you're a music lover who is also into stand-up, you might want to check out Joe Sib, who fronted the band Wax and is the co-founder of SideOneDummy Records.
