  • The Pretenders Coming To The Dodge

"The British Rock band The Pretenders with original founder Chrissie Hynde will make a stop in Phoenix to perform at Dodge Theatre on Wednesday, March 4. The tour is the band's first extensive headlining tour since 2003. The show will begin at 7:30pm. Tickets will go on-sale Monday, December 8 at 10am."Or at least that's what the press release says. Maybe it's cuz I'm from Akron, Ohio, but I take great umbrege at labeling The Pretenders a "British Rock band" since Chrissie is from my hometown, w

  • SXSW Starts Anouncing Bands

The first batch of bands for SXSW, the large music industry trade show, conference and festival every year in Austin Texas, have been announced. Unlike my Coachella post earlier this week, the list comes straight form SXSW.com so we know it is right (but subject to change). This year's line up has a number of Arizona bands who will be officially showcasing. Dear and the Headlights (Tempe, who are also playing Coachella), Golden Boots (Tucson), The Love Me Nots (Phoenix), Miniature Tigers (Pho

  • A Dan Auerbach Story, From Way Back

The Black Keys as they looked back when I interviewed them. With The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach's solo record, Keep It Hid, having come out last Tuesday and his protégé, Jessica Lea Mayfield coming to town tomorrow, I thought this would be a good time to share a story I wrote on Auerbach for my college paper back when his band was still an up-and-coming act in our shared hometown of Akron, Ohio. The story is on the jump.If nothing else, it goes to show that sometimes pissing off a source works ou

  • Jessica Lea Mayfield Impresses, Annuals Disappoint, at Rhythm Room

Jonathan McNamara We don't normally run two pieces previewing acts from a single concert in our print edition, but last week I made an exception for Jessica Lea Mayfield and Annuals at Rhythm Room. After tonight's show I'm definitely glad I did.As the headliner, Annuals, a six-piece indie act from North Carolina, should have everything going for them. They're six years in to their career, receiving a lot of love from music blogs and scoring an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien last fal

  • The Pretenders Bring Too Much Twang to Dodge

Luke HolwerdaYou'd be hard-pressed to find a better-preserved 57-year-old rock star than Chrissie Hynde. Onstage at Dodge Theatre Wednesday night, the Pretenders frontwoman looked incredible and sounded exactly as she did 30 years ago, when the band recorded their eponymous debut. Really. Her distinctive voice -- a raspy coo that's been described as a switchblade with a pearl handle -- still has every note it once did. Maybe there's something to that vegetarian thing after all.Unfortunately, for

  • Rain Washes Away the D-Backs' Chances Against the Philadelphia Phillies

Blame the rain -- or, more appropriately, the fact that the D-Backs stink -- for last night's loss in Philly. Once upon a time, the Arizona Diamondbacks were winning a game against the defending MLB champeen Philadelphia Phillies (we know, hard to believe). Stephen Drew had slugged a lead-off home run off of pitcher-of-the-decade Pedro Martinez, who was making his second major-league start since being brought up to The Show a few weeks ago. By the bottom of the third, Arizona still led. Th

  • Rob Zombie "Hellbilly Deluxe 2" Tour To Open Tour in Phoenix

Just like the horror movies he gets so much inspiration from, Rob Zombie is not afraid to revisit a successful past project when there's money to be made. Thus we have the The Hellbilly Deluxe 2 Tour, which will open in Phoenix before hitting the rest of the U.S. around Halloween. Lest you think Zombie's been milking this shtick all along, the press release helpfully pints out that, "Not since 1998's super smash triple platinum HELLBILLY DELUXE has Zombie hit the road under that moniker. So

  • VW Trainwreck: Terrible Music, Worse Flier

It's been a few months since I had the onerous task of reviewing Tempe punk band VW Trainwreck's super-shitty record Dramaturgy in our You Asked For It column, only to field comments from the band suggesting:1) I did not really listen to the record even once.2) Record companies pay for good reviews in New Times.3) I did not understand that their crass lyrics were ironic and/or postmodern satire. So, yeah, these guys are clowns and, normally, I'd say they were fairly harmless clowns. Excep
