  • Pillow Fight Fight Fight!: The Struggling Sun Devils Host Quite-Possibly the Worst College Football Team in History. It’s Party Time.

By Steve Jansen It's been like this all season for Washington State In 1981, the so-shitty Northwestern Wildcats' football team set a new NCAA record for consecutive losses with a 61-14 home shellacking at the hands of Michigan State. But instead of booing and dotting players in the back of the helmets with 9-volt batteries, what did the Wildcat fans do? They went into celebratory ape shit mode by storming the field, ripping down the goalposts, and parading down the center of Evanston yelling,

  • Friday Night Lights Frenzy Starts This Afternoon

It's one of our favorite times of the year, and not just because of all the great food and the blessed relief that temps under 100 degrees can bring. No, we're talking about the Arizona high school football championships, and all the goofy color and pagentry that the homestretch games can provide. This afternoon at 3 p.m., for example, Scottsdale Chapparal will take on Tucson Canyon del Oro at North Canyon High, which is up at 17th Street and Union HIlls. The two once-beaten teams are vyi

  • Big Games Coming Up Tonight and Saturday in Tempe for ASU

The ASU men's basketball team hasn't played in eight long days. It was back on January 21 that they squeaked by the Arizona Wsildcats in Tucson in a game that, safe to say, won't be placed into a time capsule for future generations to marvel at. Even the best of all the Sun Devils, the fabulous James Harden (slam-dunking in the photo below), had to battle his way through a tough shooting night. With that win, ASU now finds itself in a tie for second-place in the Pac-10 Confer

  • ASU Sun Devils Victimized By Mad Bomber In Pac-10 Upset

It was an unlikely coming-out party for Washington State freshman Klay Thompson at Wells Fargo Arena last night, as the rail-thin guard led the Cougars to a 65-55 upset over the Arizona State Sun Devils.  The son of former NBA player Mychal Thompson hit shots from all over the court, stealing the show from ASU star James Harden en route to a career high of 28 points. It got so that the crowd of about 10,000 grumbled and groaned every time the sweet-shooting dude (tha

  • Weekend Sweep by Devils and 'Cats of LA Schools Sets Up Monster Matchup

What was most (maybe the only thing) memorable about last night's Pac-10 slugfest between ASU and Southern Cal happened with about a minute left. USC head coach Tim Floyd (the oddly gesticulating gent in the photo) took such umbrage with a pivotal call against his squad that he felt compelled to whirl like a dervish from his bench completely across the court and halfway down the sideline. There, Floyd confronted the offending referee for what seemed like a minute or so

  • ASU Nips Arizona Wildcats in Classic Battle at Super-Loud Home Gym

A few sights, sounds and other memories from last night's thrilling ASU win over Arizona at the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe: It was the loudest crowd we've heard at the campus arena since the mid- to late-1970s, when both state schools usually had excellent, evenly matched squads. The din was constant and not -- as had been the case for most of the Lute Olson era -- split about 50-50 between Sun Devils and Wildcat fans. Oh, and the place actually was sold out, a rarity even as ASU men

  • Sun Devils In Latest "Game Of The Year" Tonight in Seattle

After all is said and done in the regular college basketball season (that would be next weekend) and the Pac-10 conference tournament, the ASU Sun Devils and the Washington Huskies will find themselves playing somewhere in the Big Dance.  But all that seems so far away at the moment. At hand, in just a few hours (9 p.m. on KSAZ, Channel 34), the Devils and the Huskies will do battle up in Seattle for first place in the hotly contested league. The teams are tied for the lead w

  • ASU Sun Devils Try to Finish Regular Season on a High Note

Coming off two spirit-crushing overtime losses last weekend in Washington, the Arizona State Sun Devils try to regroup tonight against Stanford in a 6:30 game in Tempe. ASU's Pac-10 championship hopes went out the window with the back-to-back defeats, and now the team is playing for a decent seed at the upcoming NCAA tourney. Two wins over the No-Cal schools (Stanford and Cal), and maybe a win or two at the Pac-10 tourney next week will go a long way toward solidifying the Devils'

  • ASU Men's B-Ball in Freefall as Season Winds Down

The less said about the ASU men's basketball team's effort against an average Stanford team in last night's loss at Wells Fargo Arena, the better. Hard to believe it's been just a month since the Sun Devils humilated the Cardinal by 30 points up in Palo Alto, California. This time, Stanford took it to the home boys from the opening tip, showing more athleticism and, more important, far more heart than the 21st-ranked (and rapidly fading) locals. It was new head coach J

  • ASU Sun Devils About to Dance With the Owls

We were in Oklahoma City the last time the ASU men's basketball team took the floor in the wonderful event known to all as March Madness. Led by Ike Diogu, the Sun Devils got stomped by a championship-level Kansas team in the second round after upsetting Memphis a few days earlier. That would have been 2003, or six long years and a ton of missed jump shots ago (though the kid in the photo, point guard Derek Glasser, has gone a long way toward correcting that perennial problem for

  • UPDATE: Sun Devils Win! Sun Devils Win! Syracuse Orange Next

Who would have thought that the Arizona State Sun Devils could win an NCAA game with star James Harden held to just nine points? Well, they just did, beating the Temple Owls in Miami by a score of 66-57 (we predicted a 62-57 ASU win in a blog post just before game time). Point guard Derek Glasser continued his late-season surge by scoring 22 points and doing a fine job of controlling the game's flow throughout Center Jeff Pendergraph also scored 22 and dominated the glass inside for AS
