  • Ben Folds Recruits Miniature Tigers for Upcoming Tour

It seems like everyone is becoming enamored of local indie rock outfit Miniature Tigers and their catchy songs these days, including Ben Folds. The Sony power pop pianist is reportedly a fan of the band and decided to tap them as an opening act for an upcoming tour of of the eastern United States next month. The tour starts on February 11 n Princeton, New Jersey, and hits a variety of venues in the rust belt states and the south (as well as a stop in Toronto), wraping up in Atlanta at the end

  • Eric Wareheim: Awesome Videos, Great Job!

In anticipation of the upcoming live comedy show this Sunday at the Marquee Theatre featuring Adult Swim goofballs Tim & Eric, I feel I must bring to light the magnificent music video directing skills of Eric Wareheim (the nice young fellow on the right).  Wareheim is the more musically inclined of the duo, playing in a handful of bands while living in Philadelphia. He has directed a handful of music videos, infusing his mind-numbing visual aesthetic into songs by Ben Folds and Phantom

  • Kinch Clinches SxSW Birth, Tour With Dear and the Headlights

We've got a couple big pieces of news involving Kinch, who recorded what we said was the best album in Arizona last year. First comes news that they've been selected for SxSW, joining several other Phoenix bands at indie rock's biggest showcase. They've also got new tracks from their The Economic Chastisement EP posted here.Oh, and if all that weren't enough, we've learned from Psyko Steve that they'll be picked up for the the Dear And The Headlights tour Miniature Tigers dropped of to open for

  • Miniature Tigers Yucca Gig a Nice Send-Off for Big Tour

With their star swiftly rising thanks to a slate of dates opening for Ben Folds and a showcase at SxSW, a lot of us showing up at Miniature Tigers' show at Yucca Tap Room last night kind of thought this could be one the last times we'd see the band for free. If that's the case, we got a great show to remember the era by.The Yucca was, for a Wednesday night, exceptionally full for the show, which also featured Mia Riddle, Milo the Mayor and Art for Starters. Not only were there people aplenty, th

  • Mini T's, What Laura Says Play SxSW Showcases

Martin CizmarWhat Laura Says at SxSW Greetings from the outskirts of Austin, Texas, where we're holed up in a hotel after a long day of music at South by Southwest's opening day. What happened? Well, a few Phoenix bands played their showcases, hopefully making an impression on tastemakers and industry types at this massive festival, which ends up being make or break for a lot of indie acts. I saw sets by Miniature Tigers and What Laura Says tonight (Dear and the Headlights also played in a late

  • The Arizona Republic is Laughably Out Of Touch With Local Music

Is this the best band in Phoenix? The Arizona Republic is about to say so.I actually try to keep Republic-bashing to a minimum here on Up on the Sun, but, as you'd probably expect of one of the largest papers in the country to never win a Pulitzer, the Gannett-piloted drone just keeps embarrassing itself. The latest example? Their "Best Local Band" category in the reader voted knock-off of New Times vaunted Best Of Phoenix issue. Here are your choices, folks:Asses of EvilGin BlossomsGreenwichIsle

  • Miniature Tigers To Tour With Fun,

fun.'s second tour won't come to Phoenix, but there is a little local flavor to be had when the new project by former Format mamber Nate Ruess hits the road later this month. Phoenix indie act Miniature Tigers, who recently opened for Ben Folds on his East Coast tour, has been tabbed to open (dates here). In other Mini T's news, the band also did a video interview with Seattle-based music blog Three Imaginary Girls.Yes, that's Charlie Brand in the above video -- not a young Matthew Sweet. Oh,
