  • Top Ten Americana Albums of 2008

By Noah W. Bailey Picking the best folk and Americana records of the year isn't nearly as hard as discarding those great records that just didn't feel right stuck in the category. Releases by Calexico and DeVotchKa felt far too worldly to pigeonhole as folk or country, for instance, while Blitzen Trapper's fantastic Furr smells more like the Kinks than Neil Young. [Editor's note: That's why we put it on our indie-rock list.] We likewise discarded Shearwater's near-masterpiece Rook, despite the

  • You Asked For It: Matthew Reveles

One of the things I love best about Bright Eyes (and yes, I unapologetically love Bright Eyes) is the way the band mingles so many rootsy sounds in songs that end up being totally contemporary. It's for that reason, and not just Matthew Reveles' vulnerable, emotive vocals, that I compare the Tempe singer-songwriter to the Omaha outfit fronted by Conor Oberst.Reveles' impressive album We'll Meet Halfway is full of old-timey instrumentation: guitar, upright bass, jazz bass, drums, harmonica, fake

  • Conor Oberst Keeps it Mystical at Marquee

Luke HolwerdaConor Oberst on stage at the Marquee in Tempe on April 14, 2009. Comparing Conor Oberst to Bob Dylan is somewhat old hat. It's easy enough to make a case for grouping the two Midwestern singer-songwriters known for folky instrumentation and unique styles of story-telling, and people have been since Oberst's days as a child prodigy in Omaha. But what really strikes me about the two men is their fearless, oftentimes seemingly anti-commercial approach to their careers.Dylan, of course,

Martin CizmarSorry folks, this iPhone setlist shot is the best photo we got, as our photographer's credentials were lost.I know it's probably unfair to compare a crowd at the Marquee to a crowd at Coachella -- where the music-obsessed kids even greeted the white reggae band who came on after local boys Dear and the Headlights like The Beatles at Shea Stadium -- but since Franz Ferdinand and I were both in Indio Friday night, and at the Marquee Saturday, I'm gonna do it.      Seems like it's been a long time since a any Phoenix promoter felt like shelling out the big bucks it takes to rent the gorgeous Orpheum Theatre downtown for a show. It appears the inaugural tour by Monsters of Folk, an ironically-named side project featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, and singer/songwriter M. Ward, is worth it.Monsters of Folk is scheduled to play the theater on Oct. 21. Should be a great night.
