  • Pissed Off Arizona Democrats? It's About Damn Time...

The thing that's annoyed me most post-November 4 is the way state Dems seem to be shrugging and taking their losses locally on the chin. Rather than being infuriated that the state Democratic Party effed up, Dems seemingly have been resigned to getting cornholed royally by Republicans, as if that's the Dems' unalterable destiny here in Sand Land.I mowed some of this lawn in my November 11 Bird column, where I pointed out that AZ Democratic Party Chairman Don Bivens, Executive Director Maria Weeg

  • Dems Don Bivens, Maria Weeg Get Love from Sonoran Alliance; Sean McCaffrey Leaves AZ GOP

Maria Weeg, aka, "the Weeg-ster": Her resemblance to erstwhile Dukakis campaign aide Susan Estrich, is striking. It's gotta be cold comfort for Arizona Democratic Party Chairman "Dandy" Don Bivens and Executive Director Maria Weeg to be getting love from the ideological Cro-Magnons over at the Sonoran Alliance blog. After all, Bivens, at least, is up for re-election, as are all other state party office holders come this January 24, at the Dems' reorganization meeting at the Wyndham Hotel in Downt

  • Merry Christmas from State Democratic Chair Don Bivens, Have a Lump of Coal

Will the AZ Dems learn from defeat? God, I hope so. This mass e-mail below from Arizona Democratic Party Chair Don Bivens announcing his intention to continue as State Chair "through the next election cycle," reminds me of a classic scene from Animal House: The one where Otter offers Flounder a little advice after the Deltas have totaled Flounder's brother's sweet ride."Flounder, you can't spend your whole life worrying about your mistakes!" Otter tells a weeping Flounder. "You fucked up - you

  • Eckerstrom Upsets Bivens for Dem Party Chair; Pullen Beats Back James Challenge for GOP Spot

Don Bivens (left) gives way to the new Chairman of the AZ Dems Paul Eckerstrom (right). Today saw a stunning political upset of an incumbent state party chair. And no it wasn't AZ GOP Chairman Randy Pullen, who handily defeated rival Lisa James, 521 to 474 at the Republican reorganization meeting that took place at Camelback High School. Rather, the revolution occurred in the tony ballroom of the Wyndham Hotel, where former Pima County party chair Paul Eckerstrom challenged incumbent state chair

  • Jan Brewer, Joe Arpaio, Dean Martin, Sandra Kennedy and More: Candids from the AZ Dems and GOPers

So I had a load of photos left over from last week's two state party reorganization meetings, and I figured you might want view these as added illustrations for this week's Bird column. Think of it as porn for political junkies, though thankfully everyone has their clothes on. Reminds me of that line about how Washington is like Hollywood for ugly people. Well, save that Phoenix ain't no DC. Does that mean we're prettier 'cause we're closer to L.A. than the nation's capital? I'll let you figure

  • Arizona Dems in Freefall as Paul Eckerstrom Steps Down as State Party Chair

Eckerstrom, following his upset win against Bivens two weeks ago.To cop a line from that Don McLean song, somewhere Satan is laughing in delight. And Zona Republicans are laughing right along with him. This, at the news that Arizona state Democratic Party Chair Paul Eckerstrom has resigned his post after scoring an upset victory against former state party chair Don Bivens just two weeks ago.In an e-mail sent out to his fellow Dems today, Eckerstrom cited time and travel constraints as the two bi

  • Maria Weeg Out as Dems' Executive Director, And Dandy Don Bivens Plans to Run for Chair (Again)

The Weegster's takin' a powder. At least that's what the e-mails're sayin'...So, Maria, what took you so long? The two e-mail missives below just arrived via third parties, and though I've yet to receive an official confirmation from the AZ Democratic Party, the letter from party Executive Director Maria Weeg announcing her resignation seems genuine. (It ain't April Fools' Day, I checked.) The other e-mail states former state party chair Don Bivens' intention to run again after losing the

  • "Resign to Run" Law Being Scrutinized as Local Officials Seem to Flout It

Blogger and former Republican lawmaker Greg Patterson opened a tasty can of worms recently, pointing out that Attorney General Terry Goddard has apparently run afoul of the state's "resign-to-run" law. Goddard, a Democrat, recently told a crowd during a speech that "I intend to run for governor."  Other media outlets have begun running with this ball, with a southern Arizona newspaper declaring today that the situation shows the law is "worthless." Yesterday, P
