  • Dramatic Testimony Heard In Mormon Murder Case

Jurors and a packed courtroom heard riveting, often heartbreaking, testimony today as the prosecution opened its first-degree murder case against former Phoenix Suns nutritionist Doug Grant. Actually, Jenna Stradling, who is alleged murder victim Faylene Grant's 18-year-old daughter, is on the stand at the moment in downtown Phoenix, undergoing cross-examination by Doug Grant's defense attorney, Mel McDonald. Jenna is an absolutely pivotal witness for the state in this quirky and extremely hi

  • Key Witness at Mormon Murder Trial Still on Stand

Jenna Stradling, the daughter of alleged victim Faylene Grant, returns to the witness stand later this morning as testimony continues in the wacky and tragic Doug Grant murder case. Stradling, an 18-year-old student at Brigham Young University, faced a barrage of questions from prosecutor Juan Martinez and defense attorney A. Melvin McDonald Wednesday. Under Arizona law, the 16-person jury (which includes four alternates to be randomly chosen after the trial ends, probably next March) gets to a

  • Key Prosecution Witness Finally Finishes Testifying In Mormon Murder Case

Jenna Stradling -- the 18-year-old stepdaughter of murder defendant Doug Grant (the smiling guy in the photo) and a key prosecution witness in the high-profile case -- finally finished testifying a few hours ago after several tense days on the stand. The Brigham Young University freshman withstood a grueling cross-examination by Grant defense attorney A. Melvin McDonald, maintaining that she had tried to get into the master bedroom of her Gilbert home to see her mother, Faylene,

  • Key Prosecution Witness in Doug Grant Mormon Murder Trial Refutes State's Theory

Let's cut to the chase on Wednesday's testimony at Doug Grant's first-degree murder trial in downtown Phoenix: Grant (pictured) certainly has some major issues, or we (and a slew of national media types) probably wouldn't be sitting in court watching this proceeding slowly unfold. But key prosecution witness Chad White, a physician assistant who is one of this unique case's pivotal players, boldly refuted the grand jury testimony of Gilbert police detective

  • Medical Examiner At Mormon Murder Trial: "I Have No Evidence To Support This Being A Homicide."

The county pathologist who performed the autopsy on alleged murder victim Faylene Grant in 2001 told a rapt jury yesterday afternoon that he could find "no evidence to support this being a homicide."   Dr. Arch Mosley, a former Maricopa County assistant medical examiner now working in Coconino County, made the startling comment at the end of an hours-long cross-examination by Mel McDonald. The veteran barrister is representing

  • Tense Testimony Tendered In Mormon Murder Trial

Prosecutor Juan Martinez tried to paint murder defendant Doug Grant's current wife Hilary as a co-conspiring, manipulative, slutty, cold-blooded, gold-digging, backstabbing floozy during hours of tense testimony Wednesday.   Doug Grant, a onetime nutritionist for the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks, is accused of killing another of his wives, Faylene (that's the late Mrs. Grant with hubby in a July 2001 photo) back in September 2001. We have written extensively about

  • Stop The Presses! There's Slipshod Reporting in Mormon Murder Case

Reasonable minds may differ on whether Doug Grant's guilty of killing his wife, Faylene, by drugging and drowning her at the couple's Gilbert home back in September 2001. It's an understatement to call this case complex and odd. I mean, the county Medical Examiner couldn't even call it homicide (the manner of the 35-year-old Mrs. Grant's death officially remains "unidentified").  Still, enough has been said and written about the high-profile trial for any self-respecting journali

  • Crazy Goings-On at the Doug Grant Mormon Murder Trial in Downtown Phoenix

It's finally in the homestretch at the closely watched first-degree murder trial of former Phoenix Suns nutritionist Doug Grant, and the whole thing almost caved in Monday. Many of you reading this have been following this weird murder case, which we reported on in great detail before the trial started last November. Heads up: We will be doing a blow-out on the remarkable goings-on after the verdict, if jurors are able to agree on Mr. Grant's guilt or innocence during w

  • Prosecutor Calls Doug Grant "Black Angel of Death" in Closing Argument

Closing arguments started Tuesday in the closely watched trial of former Phoenix Suns nutritionist Doug Grant, and prosecutor Juan Martinez immediately went for the defendant's throat -- proverbially, of course. We'll be writing a postmortem about this remarkably weird trial when (and if) the jury returns its verdict, which could be by the end of the week, but more likely will be next week. • UPDATE: Mormon Murder Trial Jury Still Deliberating

Maricopa County Superior Court jurors in the Doug Grant murder case have been deliberating his fate for 10 hours and counting.  Grant (not the Jason-looking Doug Grant to the left) is charged with killing his wife Faylene back in September 2001 at their Gilbert home. With devout Mormon Faylene's written blessing, Grant married his ex-lover soon after his wife died in the family bathtub. We won't go into further details of the case again in this update. You can r

  • UPDATE: No End in Sight to Juror Deliberations in the Mormon Murder Trial

The 12-person jury in the Doug Grant Mormon murder case has gone home for the weekend, and it appears that members are nowhere close to reaching a verdict. The best indication of that is a "deliberation schedule" the panel sent out a few days ago to Judge Meg Mahoney, who has presided over the high-profile case: The proposed schedule now extends to the beginning of April, and it includes days off here and there for unspecified reasons. The jury began deliberations eight days ago (March 5), and

  • UPDATE: Doug Grant Murder Case Jury Deliberation Finally in Home Stretch?

It's been exactly two weeks since the jury in the Doug Grant murder case began to deliberate his fate. The panel returned to work this morning, and some close to the case suspect that a verdict finally may be near. The basis for that belief are questions the jury has had in the past few days for Superior Court Judge Meg Mahoney, who presided over the months-long trial in downtown Phoenix. On the face of it, those questions may not bode well for Mr. Gr

  • THIS JUST IN: Mormon Murder Trial Ends With Manslaughter Conviction Against Doug Grant

Sports nutritionist Doug Grant was convicted of manslaughter in the bathtub-drowning death of his wife, Faylene, by a Maricopa County Superior Court jury a few minutes ago. The so-called Mormon murder case (Doug and Faylene Grant, pictured, were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) went to the jury Thursday, March 5. Grant originally was indicted on one count of premeditated first-degree murder in the mysterious 2001 death of his wife, but prosecutor Juan Martinez threw

  • UPDATE: Doug Grant in Maricopa County Jail After Manslaughter Conviction

Doug Grant sits in the Maricopa County Jail tonight, the consequence of a deeply flawed life and the vagaries of the criminal-justice system. A 12-person jury convicted the one-time Phoenix Suns   nutritionist of manslaughter in the death of his wife Faylene. It was the least serious (though definitely nothing to sneeze at) of the three possible guilty counts before them. The panel could have returned a first- or second-degree murder verdict, each of which would have carried a far

Doug Grant, the onetime Phoenix Suns nutritionist convicted last month of manslaughter was scheduled to be sentenced Friday, May 1.
