Deputies catch dozens of undocumented workers in the immigrant round-up du jour at a maintenance facility at 19th Avenue and Lower Buckeye that contracts with the county. You knew they'd get around to it: Republican lawmakers craft an anti-abortion bill that's expected to fare better if it lands on the governor's desk than such plans did under Janet Napolitano. And speaking of guvs, the state's new Top Chef, Jan Brewer, has appointed three new cabinet members. The East Valley coul

  • Phoenix FBI Office Gets Experienced New Boss, Nathan Gray

Nathan Gray, a veteran lawman with experience in counter-terrorism and big-time drug smuggling, has been selected to head up the FBI's Phoenix office. The FBI didn't put out a picture of Gray, but posted a bio of him today on its Web site. Gray previously worked here in 2002 as an assistant special agent in charge of the office. His extensive resume includes stints in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as a legal attache, anti-drug-smuggling efforts with the CIA and a few years in Washington D.C. as

  • Man Poses as Investigator, Tries to Talk Sky Harbor Cops Into Handing Over Prisoner

Talk about huevos.Last June, a man strolled up to Phoenix police officers at Sky Harbor International Airport and tried to talk them into releasing into his custody another man they were holding on an FBI warrant, says the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. In a news release put out this afternoon, the office says that cops didn't buy Cosmon William's story that he was an investigator with the county attorney's office. Phoenix cops know better than to let someone escape, it seems. Later, a sear

  • Peoria Bank Robber Cuts Hole In Wall, Surprises Bank Employees Arriving for Work

Holy bank robbery, Batman! (Or maybe it should be hole-y). Cops and the FBI are looking for a robber with above-average planning skills who forced the employees of a Peoria bank to open a cash vault. On Tuesday morning, the man broke into a Christian bookstore right next to the Chase Bank at 8978 W. Union Hills, where he'd cut a hole in the wall at some earlier date, say Peoria police in a news release (reprinted below). When bank employees arrived, he crawled

  • Phoenix Kidnappings: FBI's Role Minimal in Immigration-Related Cases

The FBI is the nation's premier agency when it comes to kidnappings, right? Well, not in Phoenix, the so-called kidnapping capital of the country. The FBI decided years ago that it would try not to get involved when the kidnappings involve immigrants and human smugglers. Both the FBI and Phoenix police tell New Times that the federal agency passed along criteria to local police agencies that suggests when the FBI should be called on kidnapping cases. "We've certainly had discuss

  • FBI to Focus More on Kidnappings and Other Southwest Border Crimes, says Holder

Just in time for our blog post today about the role of the FBI in the Phoenix kidnapping crisis comes a major announcement that the FBI will focus more on the problem as part of a strategy to combat cartel violence. In a statement made today during his trip in Cuernavaca, Mexico, Holder singles out the FBI for more work on kidnappings: My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DE

  • Bank Robberies on the Rise in Valley; Feds and Local Authorities Pledge to Work Cases Hard

The number of bank robberies in the Valley have doubled compared to the first few months of 2008, prompting authorities to pledge to work harder on the cases. From January to May 1 in 2008, robbers held up 44 Valley banks. In the same four months in 2009, they hit 88. There were 179 bank robberies in the Phoenix metro area last year, a notable increase from 2007. But if the current pace continues, authorities say, this year might achieve a total of 271. To help tackle the problem, th

  • Source: FBI Interested in SCA Case Involving Joe Arpaio's Office

Just hung up from one of our trusty "Deep Throat" sources who tells us the FBI is highly interested in the Sheriff's Command Association case. Our source says New Times articles this morning about the men behind the SCA donations were forwarded to the local FBI office. An FBI agent soon called, hungry for more. The FBI "is offering an ear" on the case, says the source. "They'd like to know about the stuff being conducted on county time."

  • FBI Makes Arrest in Murdered Nun Case

The FBI announced this morning that it has made an arrest in the case of the nun murdered in New Mexico over the weekend -- and that's about it. Sister Marguerite BartzFor some reason, the FBI is not revealing any details about the person arrested, other than the suspect was picked up early this morning and this obvious message in a statement yesterday: "Sister Bartz did suffer substantial trauma, likely as a result of a violent confrontation with her assailant or attacker."Well, no shi

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking for the man it is calling "The First-Aid Bandit."Don't let the name fool you, this guy isn't running around slapping Band-Aids on the bleeding masses, he's robbing banks -- four of them to be precise.
