  • Concert of the Year Countdown: #8 Foxboro Hot Tubs

Show: Foxboro Hot Tubs at the Brickhouse Theatre, May 26.Hundreds of people stood in line for hours to get into this sold-out show. The now-defunct Brickhouse Theatre was packed to capacity -- so much so that a few people passed out and had to be treated for heat exhaustion outside on the curb. For fans of Green Day, the gig was worth the wait and sweat. Even though Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool came out wearing fuzzy, mop-top wigs, there was no mistaking that FHT was Green Da

The Houston Press asks that question in this post from their music blog, Rocks Off. Their conclusion? "Green Day can go back to singing about jerking off now. If they feel like it."Lots of video goodness with this funny piece.

  • Green Day's Dookie -- 15 Years Later

Yes, you silly monkey, throw it alreadyOn this week 15 years ago, East Bay punk stalwarts Green Day released their career-defining album, Dookie. Yeah, I said career-defining. Say what you will about American Idiot and what it did for the band (skyrocketing them into mega-stardom), but Green Day wouldn't even have had a chance to record that album without first unleashing Dookie onto the masses. The album, Green Day's third, sold 15 million copies worldwide and officially transformed the band i

American Idiot will take the stage this fall in BerkeleyBerkeley punk rockers Green Day will adapt their multi-platinum, Grammy-winning, catnip-for-angst-ridden tweens album American Idiot to the stage, just in time to open Berkeley Repertoire's 2009/10 season. The musical will be the first for the vaunted Berkeley Rep's new, swanky Roda Theatre, a fitting choice for Green Day, some of Berkeley's most celebrated citizens (including Counting Crows and young hippies who love to sit in trees all da

  • Green Day's 2-Year Hiatus Ends With SF Show

Ever since we got a press release about Green Day's impending album, 21st Century Breakdown, a few weeks ago, I've been eager to see when the band would start playing live again. Turns out our sister paper in San Francisco was there to see Billie Joe, Tre, and Mike play for the first time in two years. Well, play as Green Day for the first time in two years, anyway, since they were here in Phoenix under assumed names about a year ago.Anyway, the reviewer was not quite as excited about it as I pr

  • Green Day Announces Tour Dates (But Not Venues), Phoenix in August

Green Day announced dates for their 21st Century Breakdown Tour this morning (full list on jump) but haven't said where they'll be playing in each city. They come to Phoenix on August 22. That could just be a hiccup -- bands do sometimes announce dates before venues if one or two are up in the air -- but I think in this case it might actually be that they're not sure where they're playing a lot of places. I don't think anyone quite knows what the appetite for Green Day will be considering they'

Tomorrow, August 13, was when the big guns of the day came out: Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, Aerosmith, Salt 'N Pepa, Cypress Hill and Rollins Band. Jonathan McNamaraNowhere Man and Whiskey GirlNowhere Man and Whiskey Girl aren't a Phoenix band, per say. The duo lives down in Bisbee, a former mine town in southern Arizona. Shooting our latest installment of The Sun Sessions they regaled us with tales of life in the quaint town, where the temperature drops in to the 60s at night this time of year. Sounds pretty wonderful, doesn't it?After the jump, watch the band's great take on Green Day's breakthrough single "Longview," which comes from

So, yes, Green Day singer Billy Joe Armstrong immediatly looked a little silly strutting on stage at U.S. Airways Center as the piano-driven opening of "21st Century Breakdown," the title track to his band's latest record, played over the PA. It's forgivabl

  • Green Day in 140 Characters or Less

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong isn't a fan of cell phones at concerts. "Put away your cell phones, this is a fucking live concert!" he yelled at Saturday night's show at U.S. Airways Center in downtown Phoenix. Still, the Valley of the Sun was ablaze with tweets from the show. Here are a few of our favorites, and be sure to check out our review here and our slideshow here. @iPhonejunkiePNP: Stepping over 12 puking teens at Green Day show in Phoenix...ahhh to be young and "spontaneous".

One of the things I like most about New Times Music Editor Martin Cizmar is disagreeing with him. We've had some fun arguments and discussions on music, culture, the role of the press and even Eazy E. Which is why I felt compelled to write this post completely and unequivocally disagreeing with his latest column "An Ode To 1994: Green Day's Dookie and the Peak of Western Civilization." Dookie, while a milestone, was not in any way the peak of Western Civilization. It was the peak of one specific

Luke HolwerdaBret Michaels was the star of the show at Cricket Pavilion Saturday night. In the messy science of music criticism it's not often a writer gets to test his hypotheses as directly as he'd like. After drawing some fire for making an unfavorable comparison between Green Day and Poison in my review of last Saturday's show at U.S. Airways Center, I saw a rare chance to subject one of my statements to some scrutiny this Saturday as Poison and Def Leppard show played Cricket Pavilion.
