  • Arty Girl: Shopping at the Heard Museum

By Lilia MenconiSee more ornaments like this at Heard Museum North Scottsdale. It's black Friday. How could I blog about anything else but shopping? Now, I'm not the type to hit a mall on a day like today. Or most days, for that matter. But I do love to shop. And I have to say that there's nothing like a museum gift shop. Every time I go to a museum, I can't resist poking around; checking out their original jewelry, housewares and little artsy trinkets. Which is how I stumbled upon Ugly Dolls. And

  • Arty Girl: Will Wilson and Steven Yazzie at the Heard Museum

"The Sitting Room" by Steven Yazzie.I have a feeling this Friday night is going to be one of those nights where I'm so overwhelmed with art options, I become socially paralyzed and don't know what to do with myself.Already, we've got Third Friday art walk and the ASU Kurt Weiser opening, but I'll just take the liberty of adding another event to the list. From 7-9 p.m. this Friday, Will Wilson and Steven Yazzie will hold an informal reception for their joint show, "New Works" in the Berlin Gallery

  • Arty Girl: Let's Talk About...at the Heard Museum North

If you're a native Phoenician, you may see the Heard museum's permanent collection as a total snooz-fest. Thank the public school curriculum for drilling us with annual field trips to the Heard during elementary school for that. You can only mash corn in a stone bowl so many times until it becomes a little mundane. But, we're all grown up now and it may be time to revisit what the Heard has to offer. Tomorrow, if you can afford the drive or happen to live in the North Valley, you can have a whole

  • Heard Museum's Director, Frank Goodyear, Announces Retirement; Presided Over Expansion

Frank Goodyear, the director of the Heard Museum for the last 10 years, will retire at the end of the year. Goodyear's tenure coincided with a period of expansion and growth at the Valley's best-known museum, and he was appreciated for his fundraising skills. According to the news release below, Goodyear was responsible over the years for scrounging up a total of $44 million for the museum. His efforts to improve the museum still show. Okay, listen to me...I've got it all planned out.And I promise I won't just tell you to hit Third Friday. Not that you shouldn't! Yes, go to Third Friday. This is just something to do in addition to Roosevelt and Grand Ave. What kind of Arty Girl would I be to suggest otherwise? Sheesh. But once you're done with the trek through those galleries, head up Central Ave to the Heard Museum for April's NU (

  • Heard Museum West Will Close By the End of 2009

www.heard.orgCiting the recession and financial hardships, officials for the Heard Museum West location in Surprise announced today that the museum will close by the end of the year. Like the other Heard Museum locations in Phoenix and Scottsdale, the Heard Museum West housed Native American exhibits and artifacts. It opened in 2006, but officials say the revenue to sustain the 7,000-square-foot facility just isn't there. The museum expects to lose about $80,000 for the current fiscal year. T

By craftychica on flickr.Isn't she gorgeous?I was considering a blog about the Lowrider show at Phoenix Art Museum tomorrow but the fine folks over in Night & Day already got their paws on it. Nicely done, guys.Lucky for us, there's plenty of good stuff going on around town. Like the Heard Museum's NU (Native You) taking place tonight, on-site at their Central Avenue location. NU is an ongoing event, scheduled every third Friday of the month, to coincide with the downtown Third Friday A

Goodbye, sweet prince...I know, I know...so sad.The West Valley doesn't seem to be doing so well these days. Earlier this month, West Valley Art Museum "temporarily" closed (read my blog about it) and now, Heard Museum West is calling it quits.

The man is responsible for the expansion of programming and the addition of two locations (one that will unfortunately close tomorrow due to our pathetic economy). The Heard just announced that the search is over for his replacement. • Arty Girl: New Exhibit at the Heard Museum North Opens

Red Top II by Norman Akers.I live in a small apartment fourplex that was built in 1927. Sometimes when my mind wanders, I imagine what has happened within these walls. What kind of people lived here? How many times has someone gotten freaky here? And has anyone ever died? Then I start to get a little creeped out and I have to stop.I naturally think this way about old buildings but I forget to ask such questions about the actual land the building sits on. How very Western of me.The Heard Museum
