  • Violet Wild at Last Exit

It's nearly 1 a.m. and I'm a few drinks into the night. I'm at Tempe's Last Exit Bar & Grill to watch Violet Wild, one of my favorite local pop-rock bands who used to play anywhere and everywhere a year ago and pretty much whored themselves out in the local music scene - playing gigs almost every week. It's been awhile - at least three or four months - since I last caught them live and I can't help but get caught up in the cheesiness of the band tonight. It's everywhere! Bobby Scott, the ba

  • Tempe's Black Moods reunite for New Year's Eve Show

Tempe's Last Exit Bar & Grill will reunite The Black Moods on New Year's Eve, Wednesday, for a headlining performance. The once-hot high-energy trio, who broke up (guitarist Josh Kennedy is now in Violet Wild) more than two years ago, were unlike most bands in the local music scene and brought a classic rock vibe to the stage. Last Exit's New Year's Eve Bash will also feature Tramps & Thieves, Dead Hot Workshop and Shelby James & The Crying Shames. Doors open at 8 p.m. and cover is

  • Flier of the Week: Shake!

Rarely will you find me at a Scottsdale dance club on a Saturday night -- if you're looking for an Up on the Sun contributor, keep your eyes peeled for Kelly Wilson -- but, if you do, there's a very high probability it will be at The Rogue for "Sir" William "Fucking" Reed's Shake!Other than the way the doormen refuse to bend on the cover (I've talked them down once) and that time some guest DJ played "Funkytown," I've never been let down. So, at the hazard of risking my own ability to get in qui

  • Jimmy Eat World's Clarity Anniversary Show Impressive

Luke Holwerda All week we've been sharing personal essays about Jimmy Eat World's Clarity, online and in print. Sadly, I don't have a Clarity story because I wasn't in to the Mesa emo/pop act until my college paper got an advance copy of Bleed American, the follow-up to Clarity, in July 2001. But man, oh man, did I love Bleed American. We played that record a few times every day in the college paper office, to the point that our ex-Deadhead newspaper adviser knew all the words. On September 10, 2

  • Where to Party During St. Patty's Day Tomorrow

Bad Religion is scheduled to perform with Slightly Stoopid at the St. Patrick's Day Celebration at Tempe Beach Park. Tomorrow is one of the biggest drinking/partying holidays of the year and definitely don't wanna be unprepared. So if you're looking for a place to suck down a little (or a lot) or green beer and sport a funky green hat, make sure to peep our exhaustive St. Patrick's Day Guide for a comprehensive list of all the celebrations happening tomorrow. • All-American Rejects Jam During Super Secret Practice in Tempe

Kelly WilsonThe All-American Rejects get their rock on Friday during a super secret jam session in Tempe. The All-American Rejects held a super secret show Friday in a warehouse on the northeast corner of McClintock and Broadway. OK, it wasn't a show as much as a jam session in preparation of Saturday's Tempe Music Fest but it was pretty damn cool nonetheless. The jam session was so intimate that only a mere 20-or-so people were on hand for this ultra-exclusive event. Up on the Sun contribu

  • Tempe Music Fest 2009: How 3 Doors Down, Kid Rock, All-American Rejects and Shiny Toy Guns Rocked Us

Photos By Jonathan McNamaraSee more shots from Tempe Music Festival. This weekend Tempe Music Fest 2009 united us once again from scattered Valley citizenry to one cohesive force bent on rocking the hell out. This year Fergy and My Chemical Romance got traded in for straight ahead rock-'n'-rollers Kid Rock and 3 Doors Down with a couple of All-American Rejects and Shiny Toy Guns thrown in for good measure. If you were there, you know what a great time it was. For those who got stuck at home

  • Lucero Live: Moshing to Pedal Steel

Martin CizmarLucero: Music to mosh to!Dear ex-hardcore kids,Please stop ruining roots music.Look, I get it, you're pretty much aged out of hardcore shows, but you're covered in tattoos and have plugs in your earlobes, and it's hard to find a scene. Every band you've ever liked seems to be starting a folkie side project so it kinda makes sense to pick up this alt-country/roots/Americana thing. And that's cool. But, seriously guys, you're fucking it all up right now.Last week's fight outside the W

  • Hairforce at Upper Deck Sports Grill: Move Over Metalhead, Hairforce Wants a Piece of the Money-Making Pie

Kelly WilsonBobby Scott and G-String give love a bad name rockin' out to a Bon Jovi track. Metalhead must be pissed. There's another hair metal cover band in town and they have G-String, the group's old guitarist who was the most charismatic member of the group. First, let me say I love Metalhead. I've spent many Sunday nights rocking out to their shows. Sadly, though, the new guitarist doesn't hold a candle to G-String. Sure he has the look, but the charisma isn't there. I'm sorry if you're re

  • Taking Back Sunday at Marquee Theatre: Why Can't You Sound More Like Your First Two Records?

Mitchell TayTaking Back Sunday take on Tuesday at the Marquee.Dear Taking Back Sunday, I'm soooo not ready for you to be "new again" as you sing about on the self-titled track to your fourth album. In fact, I wish you would just return to your former ways and be old again. Remember Tell All Your Friends and Where You Want to Be - your two best albums to date? I get that you're happy with the new album and I've heard all of you say how it's your latest and greatest to date - as bands always seem
