  • Lola Tapas' Daniel Wayne Readies New Coffee Shop

Lola Tapas owner Daniel Wayne -- who founded the ultra-hip Lux Coffeebar, then sold it and opened the tapas joint four years ago -- is getting back into the coffee game. He tells me he just signed a lease on a 1200-square-foot space on Central Avenue, just south of Camelback (4700 N. Central), in the former Tessa's Tea location. Lola Coffee will tentatively open in mid-May. It's an incredible place to be, considering that Haus Modern Living and Movies on Central are in t

  • More Action on Central: Hula's Modern Tiki

It's no secret that I'm a sucker for neat old buildings -- especially ones that house restaurants -- so imagine my delight when I discovered that somebody leased that far-out building in the middle of the Haus/Movies On Central/soon-to-be Lola Coffee strip (4700 N. Central). You know, the one with the 18-foot-high hexagonal window facing the street? Yeah, that place. Brothers Chris and Craig Delaney are teaming up with their Phoenix-raised friend Dana Mule to open Hula's Modern Tiki, a ret

  • Sweet Pea Bakery Says Goodbye

While downtown continues to break ground on a whole slew of new developments, devotees of desserts will have to wave goodbye as Sweet Pea Bakery (www.sweetpeaaz.com, 209 W. Jackson Street, 602-296-4042) closes its doors at the end of April, just weeks after Danielle Librera, chef and owner, celebrated Sweet Pea's third anniversary on March 15th. The bakery's cute as a button, from the food to the shabby chic décor, but it is off the the beaten path. We're frankly impressed that Librera las

  • Now Open: Lola Coffee

Today is the first day in business for Lola Coffee, the hip hangout created by Daniel Wayne (formerly of Lux and Lola Tapas). House-roasted coffee is one good reason to go; homemade pastries by Danielle Librera of the recently closed Sweet Pea Bakery are another. And what about the location itself? Tucked into the same tiny plaza (4700 N. Central) as Haus, Movies on Central, Oliver & Annie, and the under-construction restaurant Hula's Modern Tiki, Wayne couldn't have picked

  • Lots of New Local Eateries in the Works

AZCentral's list of 20 new restaurants scheduled to open by the end of the year has suddenly been changed to 15 since the story was posted yesterday. Not hard to figure out which five are now missing -- it's the restaurants on Jackson that Bernie Kantak is planning. Should we read between the lines and assume that the project's gotten pushed out to 2010? Let's hope not. A bunch of new Scottsdale eateries are reportedly in the works: Yellow House, a bakery and breakfast p

  • DJ Dossier: Brazilia

DJ Brazilia stands out from Phoenix's myriad mix-masters, knob-twisters, and record-spinners for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the 30-year old is one of a handful of she-jays currently working in the Valley's man-tastic dance scene; and secondly, she's the only DJ we're aware of claiming to have been sired by little green men. Yes, you read that right. Sounding just like some Weekly World News potboiler, this raven-haired Brazilian beauty swears her was conception was as a result of her bi

  • Vintage Fashion Owner David Sheflin Takes Over Movies On Central's Old Space

Last week, indie movie rental hub Movies On Central suddenly closed. This week, Vintage Fashion owner David Sheflin signed a lease to take over the space, which is located in the Xavier Square retail center on Central, just south of Camelback. The retail center is also home to specialty shop Unique On Central, Lola Coffee, and Haus Modern Living.Sheflin's Vintage Fashion has long offered an assortment of rare and high-end fashion finds: vintage gowns, costumes, and jewelry by the likes of Diane

  • Caffiend: Lola Coffee's Quadruple-Shot Espresso

The charming Lola Coffee shop on Central Avenue shares a similar ambiance with hip hangouts like Lola Tapas and Lux -- lots of comfortable chairs and couches, magazines laying about, Wi-Fi access, smooth and unobtrusive music (often jazz) in the background, and good-looking people absorbed in laptops or philosophical conversations (or both). The laid-back vibe comes courtesy of Lola Coffee creator Daniel Wayne, formerly of the aforementioned Lola Tapas and Lux. But while Lola Coffee shares a gro

  • Campus Coffee: Drip Coffee Lounge Tastes Like Growing Up

Drip Coffee Lounge is tucked away in a multitude of shops and eateries off 7th Street south of Thomas. It's a little hard to find and usually only open until 3 p.m.Overcoming those hurdles, the strong coffee and impressive lunch menu are worth the minor inconveniences. However, we will say that this little coffee joint is not suited for the typical college student's tastes.Drip's veggie sandwich is full of arugula, havarti cheese, and several other fresh veggies, toasted between two ciabatta sli

  • Coming Soon to Downtown: Lola Coffee and Pita Jungle

It's not just a rumor. According to Daniel Wayne, owner of Lola Coffee, the old Calabria Italian Deli space in the historic Gold Spot building (Roosevelt and 3rd Ave) will soon become a second outpost of Lola Coffee. Wayne has negotiated a lease and everything's underway. He hopes to open by mid-December, and he will be baking and roasting coffee in the space. As for Pita Jungle moving in to the same building, Pita Jungle's vice president, Rick Howard, says that the company has been con

  • Cartel Coffee is Expanding to Downtown Phoenix

It's a coffee Renaissance in downtown. Just got the lowdown from the guys at Tempe's Cartel Coffee Lab that they're opening a second location in the heart of Downtown, at 1st Street and Washington (right across the street from the new CityScape development). The timing is hazy, because they have some construction to do to get the space ready, but hopefully they'll set up shop by the end of the year. Cartel joins an ever-growing roster of hip coffee hangouts in the area -- two R
