  • Phoenix Light Rail Marks First Crash With Vehicle Since Opening to Passengers

Uh-oh. The light rail system has been operating with passengers for just four days and it's already been involved in a vehicle collision. That doesn't seem to bode well for the on-street system, which logged another minor accident earlier this month during its test phase. Whether the accident rate will pick up remains to be seen. Valley Metro has studied safety from other cities that had to learn the hard way, like Houston and Los Angeles, but knowing the Valley's drive

  • Sammi Hanratty, Local Child Actress, Stars in Doll-Based Movie

Valley child actress Sammi Hanratty lives in Scottsdale -- when she can.Busy as a bee -- but not a Mean Bee (we'll get to that in a moment) -- Hanratty travels frequently to Los Angeles for her work in the CBS show The Unit or The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Next week, according to her Web site, she'll be in New York City at the young-girl's-dream-store American Girl Place signing autographs and helping promote her new movie, which is based on the popular series of dolls.

  • SxSWers Spirit Animal, Saint Motel and Asa Random Stopping in Scottsdale Monday

Phoenix's prime place in the vast desert between Los Angeles and Austin really comes in handy this time of year, as we get tons of shows by otherwise-usually-too-hip-to-play-here acts stopping by on their way to South by Southwest. Jose Gonzolez rounded a bunch of them up for you in the paper this week, but I also wanted to mention a cool show happening at The Rogue Bar in Scottsdale Monday. Our friend Murph of So Much Silence fame is putting together a cool bill with Angelenos Spirit Animal (el

  • Now Open: 25 Degrees at CityNorth

Craving a burger? Bored with the usual? Well you're in luck. Today's the opening day for 25 Degrees, an upscale burger joint/wine bar at the new CityNorth in north Phoenix. (The name, by the way, refers to the temperature difference between a medium-rare and well-done burger.) It's the third outpost of the restaurant, which also has locations inside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in L.A., as well as Hotel G in Beijing. The menu features four signature burgers, as well as a build-your-ow

  • DJ Fashen Bids Farewell to Phoenix Starting Tonight

After close to two decades of spinning up hip-hop and dance music at practically every major spot our city has to offer (as well as working behind the mic at Power 98.3 for a number of years), DJ Fashen is departing the PHX in favor of an L.A. address. Much like Markus Schulz, and Eddie Amador before him, the 38-year-old says he's outgrown the regular Valley club grind here and feels like the SoCal scene will provide him many more opportunities. "I'm finally done with Phoenix," he says. "Ju

  • DJ Dossier: Fashen

As you read this, DJ Fashen is getting ready to drop some high-energy dance cuts for club kids in our nation's capital. Then he'll spend the next few weeks bouncing around North America like some bald-headed pinball, flying between Boston, San Diego, Alberta, and even down to Florida. But somewhere in this cross-continent whirlwind of non-stop travel, Fashen will be making two appearances back here in his hometown. Unfortunately for local EDM fans, these gigs will be his last in the Valley

  • Why Don't You Start a Food Truck Business?

Food trucks have quite the buzz these days, especially the Kogi Korean BBQ-to-Go trucks in Los Angeles. Rabid fans follow the biz on Twitter and get tweets on where to find Korean shortrib tacos at any given moment. While chowing down on some of Nobuo Fukuda's badass pork belly buns at his one-off event at Welcome Diner the other night, the subject came up in relation to Phoenix. Why the hell aren't there more food trucks in Phoenix? After all, we're all about car culture -- just like L.A. -- so

  • Secret Supper Club Finally Hits Phoenix

By-invite-only, underground dinner parties have been all the rage in Los Angeles, Portland, New York, you name it. It's been one of the biggest trends of the year, but strangely hasn't hit the Valley until now. Better late than never, I say. A few different people in town have talked to me recently about wanting to start something here, but now they've all been beaten to the punch by the soon-to-debut Culinary Mischief (love that name!), whose private feast for 30 lucky guest
