  • Concert Calendar for This Weekend: Theresa Andersson, Bob Log III, The Slackers, and More

Theresa Andersson is scheduled to perform on Sunday at Modified Arts. The holiday season is finally over, which means we're close to the end of the interminable "dry period" of big-name concerts as band's put away their egg nog and start touring again. So who's on tap for this weekend? Cutie-pie indie sensation Theresa Andersson, that's who, as well as visits to the Valley by weirdo Tucson rocker Bob Log III, hip-hop hero Abstract Rude, ska pioneers The Slackers, and other performers. the re

  • You Asked For It: Matthew Reveles

One of the things I love best about Bright Eyes (and yes, I unapologetically love Bright Eyes) is the way the band mingles so many rootsy sounds in songs that end up being totally contemporary. It's for that reason, and not just Matthew Reveles' vulnerable, emotive vocals, that I compare the Tempe singer-songwriter to the Omaha outfit fronted by Conor Oberst.Reveles' impressive album We'll Meet Halfway is full of old-timey instrumentation: guitar, upright bass, jazz bass, drums, harmonica, fake

  • The One Year Anniversary of You Asked For It

It's hard to believe, but we've been slogging through You Asked For It submissions for a year, as of today, May 21. My predecessor, Niki D'Andrea, started YAFI as a way of catering to local bands that bitched about her coverage and it still fills that function today though, as I learned, and as Niki has confirmed, we've been impressed by a handful of submissions we've gotten from bands brave enough to toss their CDs in the mail to us, knowing we'll write whatever we think about it without holdin

  • Summer of Sound: Americana Show Saturday

New Times annual local music showcase, Summer of Sound, starts this Saturday at Mill Cue Club. Yes, Mill Cue Club. It's part of our effort to bring music back to Mill Avenue, where all five of our genre-based shows (Americana, pop, indie, hard rock, hip hop) will be. The show starts at 7 p.m. and features the best local Americana acts: Tractor Pull Divas, The Cartwheels, Matthew Reveles, and The Sugar Thieves, along with the headliner, ass-kicking LA band, The BellRays. • Summer of Sound Americana Show Brings Live Music To Mill

Victor Palagano I feel like it'd be a little cheesy to write a real "review" of a show I helped book but, suffice to say, our first Summer of Sound showcases kicked some ass Saturday night. In addition to our annual effort to spotlight the best local bands of five genres, we're bringing live music back to Tempe's Mill Avenue this year by putting shows back on a street where the surviving clubs long ago switched to DJs.Check out our slideshow for shots of The Bellrays, Matthew Reveles, The Sugar

  • 10 Things Under $10 This Weekend: Stanky Legs, Industrial Mayhem, and Free Booze

The GS Boyz are scheduled to perform tonight at Afterlife in Scottsdale. That nutty naturalist Henry David Thoreau once wrote, "All good things are cheap." Frankly, we couldn't agree with the Walden author more, especially since our weekend roundup if chock full of events and gigs that are both boffo and bargain minded. There's hip-hop shows, industrial rock blowouts, and even some free booze. Take a look-see for yourself: House 7340 vs. FauxShow at Axis/Radius (Friday)Who'd win in a fi

  • Matthew Reveles Wins The Train Tracks Quarterfinal

Matthew Reveles has won the second quarterfinal of The Train Tracks. At the most recent First Friday, the Tempe singer-songwriter impressed the Phoenix Art Museum crowd, winning more votes than Captain Squeegee and Nowhere Man and Whiskey Girl. Along with Dry River Yacht Club, Reveles represents two of the big winners who'll face off at the end of the year in this project co-sponsored by New Times.Read Chris Hansen's Orf feature story on Reveles here or check out my review of his excellent debut

Yucca Tap Room owner Rodney Hu.Rodney Hu has some big plans for the Yucca Tap Room. Walking through a vacant restaurant space adjacent to his Tempe bar and music venue, Hu eagerly gestures around the room while describing how he'll transform the place into a funky lounge area. "There will be a doorway from the Yucca here and booths along the wall there," he says. "The bar is gonna come across this side and we'll have some old school video games probably here, pool tables there, and then my liqu
