  • Local Photo Enforcement Vandalism is Child's Play Compared to Destruction of Speed Cameras Elsewhere

New Times first reported two weeks ago that the speed cameras being placed abundantly throughout town by the Arizona Department of Public Safety were being "vandalized" with -- gasp -- Post-It notes. Scofflaw activists hope placing the sticky notes on camera lenses will bring attention to their cause and allow at least a few speeding motorists to escape citations. An Arizona Republic article states the protesters have also been spraying the cameras with

  • Sonoran Alliance Anonymous Blogger Criticizes, Praises New Times Coverage of Don Stapley

In looking at Sonoran Alliance blog post about Andrew Thomas running for state attorney general, we couldn't help but notice another post by our mostly anonymous friends -- this one about New Times.  It seems that "Pat," whoever that is, believes that New Times contradicts itself about indicted County Supervisor Don Stapley when one recent article in the newspaper is compared to two others. Further, Pat says the newspaper "loses all credibility" because of the supposed contradic

  • Sheriff's Office Swears All Videos Released in Beating Death After New Times Sues

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office blew off New Times when we first requested the videos and other documents associated with the death of jail inmate Juan Mendoza Farias. So, New Times sued under Arizona's public records law. The officials stalled, apparently because they felt the material might be too harmful too release before voters made their choice in November between Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his political opponent, Dan Saban. Lo and behold, the sheriff's office eventually compli

If you live or work downtown and need a quick and cheap(!!) breakfast, you can do no worse than 12 East Café, right across the street from the light-rail stop on Jefferson and 12th streets. Here's the deal with this place (btw, it's right across the street from New Times' office): It's not gonna blow your mind with amazing food, but the breakfast is better than average and the place is highly accessible if you work anywhere near downtown.12 East has had a banner hanging outside for a while now

  • Phoenix New Times Does It Right, Says Editor & Publisher Magazine

Time to toot our own bugle: The Phoenix New Times has been selected as one of the "10 That Do It Right" for 2009 by Editor & Publisher magazine. Our competition in the field: Every other newspaper in the country, apparently. The magazine says this isn't a "best-of" award, "but rather a collection of newspapers that are doing one particular thing very well (sometimes more than one thing), and merit recognition for that effort and achievement." Sounds good to us. New Times

www.demotivators.comAny aspiring journalists looking for a great gig? Well New Times parent company, Village Voice Media, is seeking an energetic young writer for what may be the greatest job in journalism -- marijuana critic. • Downtown is Ovah: The Shirt, The Followup Column, The Contributors

If you pick up a copy of the brand new New Times (or, I guess, just click this link) you'll come across my latest Sonic Truth column, a followup to the "Downtown is Ovah" column I penned predicting that the demise of Modified Arts will lead to a shift of live music and local bands to Tempe. Hopefully this will advance the conversation a little more than, say, this dude, who can't seem to make the first seven words of his "story" accurate and never bothered to link to my piece, which is ridicu

  • VW Trainwreck: Terrible Music, Worse Flier

It's been a few months since I had the onerous task of reviewing Tempe punk band VW Trainwreck's super-shitty record Dramaturgy in our You Asked For It column, only to field comments from the band suggesting:1) I did not really listen to the record even once.2) Record companies pay for good reviews in New Times.3) I did not understand that their crass lyrics were ironic and/or postmodern satire. So, yeah, these guys are clowns and, normally, I'd say they were fairly harmless clowns.
