  • Arty Girl: Go to PAM for First Friday

"Grain Series" by Richard LermanOh, First Friday...while I enjoy writing about the stuff on Roosevelt Row and Grand Ave, sometimes it just feels like the easy way out. That's why I like to take you a little bit off the beaten path.I guess I'm just a girl who likes to keep her options open.So one extra option for tonight is the Phoenix Art Museum which is free to the public from 6-10 p.m. Other than their permanent collection and other current shows, they've got a few works up right now that have

  • Bounty Hunter: Buy stuff today, get karma points

This time of year, there's a lot of talk about thinking of others instead of yourself. Whether it's shopping for the perfect holiday present for your sweetie or picking an angel off the Salvation Army tree, there really is something to be said for the joy of giving. Aww, can't you just smell the...holiday spirit?? If you don't want to battle mall crowds to pick up a toy for the Angel tree or school supplies for your office's donation bin, no worries. • What's On Tap for This Weekend's Art Detour

Nowhere Man and a Whiskey Girl will perform tonight at the Ruby Room Lounge. Maybe it's just us, but doesn't it just seem like a really nice day outside today? Mild weather, cool breezes, and lots of clouds. Basically, the perfect kinda weather to be out all weekend on the sidewalks of downtown Phoenix. It's Art Detour weekend, which means Roosevelt Row, Grand Avenue, and other locations will be swamped and swollen with crowds. The action runs from tonight through Sunday, and we've assembled a

  • New in Downtown: Vinery 214

The word on the streets is that Vinery 214, a new Mediterranean restaurant/wine bar on Roosevelt Row, finally opened its doors a few days ago. According to their website -- a trainwreck if I've ever seen one -- the menu includes a "Morocaan stuffed burger with spicey sweet potato fries," "Fruite de Marie," soups with "Artesian" breads from MJ, and "gormet pizzas" (I'm dyyyyying here!!). They also have an "exstensive wine selection." Supposedly they're open for lunch and

  • What's On Tap for Tonight's First Friday: UFOs, Back Ted N-Ted, and DJs galore

Close encounters of the weird kind are scheduled to take place at tonight's First Friday. Someone better call in Mulder and Scully, because there's gonna be a UFO sighting going down during tonight's First Friday in downtown Phoenix. Or at least, that's what the people at the Firehouse (1015 North First Street) are saying is gonna happen. According to Firehouse artist-in-residence Michael 23, the unidentified flying object in question will be approximately 10 feet in diameter, made up of

  • Back Ted Bring New Material To First Friday Show

Jonathan McNamaraBack Ted N-Ted outside Lost Leaf on Roosevelt RowIn the disorganized menagerie of music and art that you'll find at a typical Phoenix First Friday, I've found that it's usually best to show up without plans and let the muse lead you. Friday night I showed up with a mission, though: See Back Ted N-Ted at Lost Leaf. Now, I've seen Modern Art Records house producer Ryan Breen's band plenty of times, but having heard the new material, just recently posted on his MySpace, I had to se

  • Valley Venue Modified Arts Battles a Big Stink

Something smells funny at Modified Arts, and it's not just the sweaty bodies packed in to see the latest indie rock group. The beloved modest arts venue on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix has been suffering with the erratic aroma of sewage. If you've been in Modified during the past week -- or indeed in the past couple years, you might have caught wind of it. Kimber Lanning, the owner of the Modified Arts building, circa 1925, wasn't exactly thrilled to discuss the subject, but she admits

The Melrose District's loss is Evans Churchill's gain. In case you hadn't heard, CenPho vinyl emporium Revolver Records will be moving later this month from its current home on Seventh Avenue into much-roomier digs at 918 North Second Street, which is just off Roosevelt Row across from Carly's Bistro. According to co-owners Steve Zimmerman and T.J. Jordan, the new location opens on July 2 and offers 1,700 square feet of space for them to hawk their huge cache of vintage platters, which shou

  • Arty Girl: First Friday FYI

By HH Studio on flickr Creative CommonsRoosevelt Row can be a little overwhelming on First Friday. Every month, I wade my way through a sea of people for a couple hours, then burn out and head home. Of course, I inevitably miss a couple items on my "to see" list. This Friday will be jam-packed for sure. So here are a couple spots to prioritize for your First Friday mental map.

If you make crazy faces, club candids will find you.If yesterday's blog comments about the mayhem on Roosevelt Row are any indication, folks are looking for a quieter place to view art on First Friday.Of course, there's always Grand Avenue. But this past Friday, we checked out a brand spankin' new art walk at Heritage Square Park. We rolled in around 9 p.m., just when some of the run off from Roosevelt and Grand were cruising through to catch a last glimpse of art and hit the Rose & Crown
