  • Night Train: Van Buren/Central & Van Buren/First Avenue (Stop #12)

Where: Seamus McCaffrey's Irish Pub & Restaurant (18 W. Monroe St., 602-253-6081). Walk one block South and one block East from where you stumbled off the train.  Drink: a pint of Guinness for the tiny sum of $5.50. Scene: Seamus McCaffrey's has long been one of the Valley's premier Irish pubs and it's a particular popular watering hole for downtown Phoenix office workers. And one of the drinks these cubicle drones are particularly fond of is a proper pint of Guiness and other Irish impor

  • Coming in January: New Irish Pub Downtown

What the heck is a turf accountant? I had to Google that one. The American Heritage Dictionary says it's a British term for a bookmaker licensed to take bets on horses. Huh. In downtown, though, Turf Accountant is the name of the new Irish pub set to open at 705 N. 1st Street at the end of next month, reportedly from the same people behind Seamus McCaffrey's. Can we interpret the unusual name to mean that they're betting on downtowners racing for a pint? Tucked into the same building as Se

  • Now Open Downtown: The Turf Restaurant & Pub

Andrew MasonJust in time to get up and running for St. Patrick's Day, the owners of Seamus McCaffrey's have opened a new restaurant/watering hole in downtown, called The Turf Restaurant & Pub. The place opened quietly this past Saturday, and will continue its soft opening this week with evening-only hours, from 5 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. The menu is currently limited to lighter fare, such as buffalo chicken wraps. The Turf will also be serving lunch -- tentatively starting ne

Not only is the 35-year-old one of the most charming cats we've ever met, he also gets to tend bar at the Lost Leaf (one of hippest drinkeries in the whole Valley) and can pluck the upright bass with serious aplomb for jazz/experimental/world band Sonorous. Plus he's pretty fly with a paintbrush and canvas to boot, and has created some of the most stunning fantastic realism works tha

  • Battle of the Shepherd's Pie

Shakespeare's vs. The Turf Restaurant & Pub When we're feeling a little low, the first stop is usually Tempe's Rula Bula for a pint and a plate of shepherd's pie. With ground beef, veggies, whipped potatoes and cheese, this dish is a comfort classic and one of the first things that comes to mind when you think British Isles fare. This week, we sampled the pies at two newer restaurants -- one Irish, one British -- to see how their versions stack up. In One C

  • Behind the Bar: Ted Grossman at Shady's

Adriane GoetzTed Grossman unwinds with a drink after his shift at Shady's.Whether it's booze, music, film or food, Ted Grossman admits he's a bit of a snob. In this case, however, knowing that he'd think your favorite films are garbage and that you couldn't even smell his favorite drink without gagging doesn't make Grossman unlikeable; it's actually quite the opposite. His sophisticated booze palate and affinity for early 60s French gangster films and dub reggae make you want desperate
