  • Coming Soon: Barrio Cantina & Grill

No wonder there were rumors. A couple months ago, I'd heard that the acclaimed Barrio Cafe was moving to Paradise Valley, and I just wasn't buying it. Come on -- can you see chef-owner Silvana Salcido Esparza, a pierced and tattooed CenPho gal, leaving her 16th Street digs? Nuh uh. She tells me that the restaurant's been getting tons of calls from excited fans, but that she can't imagine opening in a place that's not really, um, the barrio. But as it turns out, there is a new place open

  • Devour Phoenix Takes Over CenPho Culinary Festival

West of Western is no more at the Phoenix Art Museum, but the show must go on. The fifth annual installment of the popular culinary festival took place at the museum this past March. In March 2010, look for an all-new culinary fest at the museum called "Devoured," sponsored by a just-launched non-profit organization called Devour Phoenix. Devour Phoenix is a group of independently owned local restaurants who've joined forces to promote Phoenix as a dining destination -- along the lines

  • Chef Talk: Silvana Salcido Esparza, Barrio Cafe

Lauren Gilger Silvana Salcido Esparza behind the bar at Barrio Cafe. When she was 19, Silvana Salcido Esparza left her family's Mexican bakery in Merced, California, and moved to downtown Miami to work in international banking. "Columbians would come into my office with paper bags full of $100,000 in each bag," she says. It was a far cry from the life she left back home in California, and just as far from the life she leads now. As it turns out, the food business runs in her veins. Espa

Lauren GilgerEnchiladas del mar from Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza at Barrio Cafe.Don't go serving Silvana Salcido Esparza some over-worked, over-wrought, over-thought dish that sits in a nice little design in the very center of the plate. "I don't like my food to be puréed, recongealed, molded and then sliced, and they only give me this much," she says, holding her thumb and pointer finger up, with about an inch of space left in between. For Esparza, stick to the basics. "I think food should

  • 8 Places for President Obama to Try on His Next Phoenix Visit

Call me a shameless arugula eater, but I still can't get over the Obama family's choice of dinner destination when they were in Phoenix this past Saturday night: Macayo's Mexican Kitchen on Central Avenue, the flagship among the Southwestern chain's 18 locations. Seriously? Sure, Macayo's has been around long enough to be an "institution" -- a few years back, I learned that there's been a longtime rivalry between Macayo's and El Charro in Tucson over who invented the chimichanga.  But
