  • Shaq is Really on Twitter, and He’s Following My Mom

Twitter is a social networking site where people send updates from their computers and cell phones about what they’re doing and where they are at any given moment. There have been plenty of faux accounts where people have posed as celebrities (there was a guy pretending to be Stephen Colbert early this year), so when I heard that basketball superstar Shaquille O’Neal had an account as “The Real Shaq,” I was skeptical.

  • Shaq and the Suns Give Game Tickets Away on Twitter

Yesterday, we reported that Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal had an account on Twitter, a social networking site where users post updates about their activities. Now Shaq, along with Phoenix Suns Digital Media & Research Director A. Jo. Martin are giving away Suns tickets via Twitter, and Shaq has actually requested to meet certain Twitter users in person.

  • Who's Afraid of CNN's Rick Sanchez? Governor Janet Napolitano

Embedded video from CNN VideoArpaio defending Nappy on Rick Sanchez's CNN broadcast. Why won't the Napster go on CNN anchor Rick Sanchez's afternoon show? Following President elect Barack Obama's pick of Arizona Governor Napolitano to be his administration's Homeland Security czar, Sanchez has repeatedly invited Nappy to be on his show and answer some tough questions about her "cozy" relationship with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. But true to her craven self, Napolitano refuses to gra

  • Flier of the Week: Andrew Jackson Jihad

Almost every local venue has been going through a long post-holiday slump, booking-wise. Not Trunk Space. The Jewel of Grand Avenue has been staging a ton of shows lately, including the Back Ted N-Ted concert we shot earlier this week and the concert promoted by this cool flier, local folkie Andrew Jackson Jihad, who's also doing a lot California shows in the next month.Jihad has a nice sound, but he also gets some cred from his MySpace's About Me section, wherein he posts a hilariously negative

  • Phunk Junkeez to Release Live Album in Spring

The Phunk Junkeez announced on their MySpace page that they will release a new live album sometime this spring. The disc, a follow-up to 2007's "Hydro Phonic," will feature new and unreleased tracks from the local high-energy rap/rock band. The group recently posted "Come to Party," a new track, on their MySpace page from their latest disc.

  • Jimmy Eat World Is on Twitter

Hey, Tweeps! One of Arizona's finest, Jimmy Eat World, is on Twitter. The band is joining the ranks of popular local groups such as The Loveblisters, Miniature Tigers, and The Maine who use the social-networking site to Tweet about band news, share fun anecdotes, and photos in 140 characters or fewer. And the band already has 2,552 followers. Some of their latest tweets: Today: Happy Birthday to Ricky Burch! 34! The eldest member of the band. Earlier today: Sorry for everyone who is ticketless

  • Facebook Will Revamp Web Site Terms Due To Public Outcry

After a mass backlash from its users, Facebook is trying to make nice after the Consumerist posted an item stating that the social networking Web site owns everything its users upload, even after deleting their profiles. The site will revert back to its old terms of use, according to a blog post by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg late Tuesday. Zuckerberg stated on the company blog that the site will revise their terms to clarify some parts for its users. "Many of us at Facebook spent most

  • Shaq Meets Fans at 5 & Diner in Phoenix Through Twitter

As we reported on this blog back in November, Suns star Shaquille O'Neal's on Twitter, the "micro-blogging" site where users can post short messages on the Internet (through computers or their cell phones) that detail what they're doing at any given moment. (For example, Shaq Twittered on January 16 at 10:57 p.m.: "I cant sleep gotta get 2 walmart").  But it was this Twitter from Shaq last Thursday that really caught the attention of Twitter users in Phoenix: "Im at 5 n diner n phoenix."

  • Sheriff Joe Arpaio Impersonator Posts Funny Updates on Twitter

Faux Joe captured on screen.   There's no way it can be the real Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Twitter -- we doubt he's anywhere near tech-savvy enough to micro-blog on a social networking site with applications like "Twitterfox" and "Twim," and the Twitter updates he's been posting are way too funny to come from a guy who's perpetually scowling and grumbling. But somebody has opened a Twitter account as Sheriff Joe Arpaio, claiming on the page that he's "proudly keeping watch over the gr

  • Phoenix Suns' Twitter Takeover Continues With a Suns Tweets Web Site

Sunstweets.com gathers together all Twitter updates related to the Suns. The Phoenix Suns have built a presence on social networking site Twitter, and now some local Twitterers and Suns fans are helping to bring Suns players and fans together via a site called sunstweets.com. Several months ago, the Planet Orange presence on Twitter was started by Amy Jo Martin, Director of Digital Media and Research for the Suns, and Suns Public Relations Manager Krystal Temple. Soon after, they recruite

  • Saosin/The Cover Up Cancel March Clubhouse Date

Phoenix hardcore band The Cover Up announced through a MySpace bulletin that their March 17 show -- opening for the equally hardcore Saosin at Tempe's The Clubhouse Music Venue -- has been canceled. The group didn't offer up many details aside from a "Sorry yallz" on a posted bulletin. Saosin blogged on their MySpace page that they had to cancel a handful of shows, including some SXSW dates, because they "would like to have a record out by June and will need to make sure everything is in its

  • A New Way to Tell Who Was Buzzing at SxSW

If you are like most people reading about SxSW on every blog out there, it can be a bit overwhelming. But that is nothing compared to how overwhelming it can be to actually be at a festival where 300 bands are playing at every minute (how many stages does Coachella or EdgeFest have going at any one time? Three? Four? SxSW has HUNDREDS at any moment). Well, the people over at Digital Music News came up with a way to see who really was creating a buzz at the festival this year. Twitter. They searc

Less than a week after getting booted from the now-extinct Lyte Lounge & Bistro, Wednesday night hip-hop throwdown Groove Candy will take up residence at CenPho restaurant/jazz spot Doc's Place starting on April 8. Power 98.3 mid-day jock Karlie Hustle, who hosts the weekly event, made the announcement over her Twitter account tonight. • Pete Wentz is in Phoenix and Giving Out Fall Out Boy Tickets on Twitter

It looks like some of Fall Out Boy - bassist and band sound piece Pete Wentz - have arrived in the Valley early. Wentz has been twittering about being in Phoenix on his page (Pete Wentz), noting that baby Bronx is with him, which means wife Ashlee Simpson - whose uncle is owner of the Arizona-chain Blue Agave restaurants - is most likely in town, too. "Phoenix, AZ: Lots of ocean front property. Also, no ocean," he tweeted earlier today. The bass player and FOB song writer gave away some spe

  • Meghan McCain Calls (Faux) Joe Arpaio a "Twitter Creep" Just Like Karl Rove (w/Update)

from WikimediaCommons Sheriff Joe's keeping watch on Meghan McCain via Twitter... UPDATE: Sadly, Meghan McCain's "Twitter creep" isn't the real Slim Shady (read, "McCoy.") Rather, it's the faux Joe Arpaio that New Times has blogged about in the past. Score one for faux Joe. After painstakingly going through Meghan McCain's Twitter correspondence, I found only one comment from "Joe Arpaio," and it turned out to be Joe's satirical Twitter-doppelganger. Sorry to get everyone all excited. I s

Before the Internet, restaurants had to rely on TV and newspaper ads and word of mouth (OMG, how totally prehistoric!) to pimp their daily specials. While these archaic delivery methods are still around, now diners can find daily food specials with the click of a mouse on sites like Facebook and Twitter -- that is, if they know which Valley restaurants/chefs/etc. are reliable Twits, er, Twitterers.   Here are five of our faves: District's Ha

MC Hammer before Twitter. There's probably no human being I've ever held in higher regard than MC Hammer. Truly. Over the span of my 29 years, I'm hard-pressed to think of anyone I idolized quite like Hammer circa summer 1990 something my mom confirmed earlier this year upon discovering some old VHS tapes of me "wearing [my] Vanilla Ice pants" and trying desperately to mimic Hammer's dance moves. So, it would have been impossible for me to miss the chance to talk to the dancer/rapper known pre-
