  • Flier of the Week: sBACH

By Martin Cizmar I bring you this week's Flier of the Week not because I love the Towelie-esque flier - though it is pretty cool - but because I don't want to be the only person who shows up to see videogame rockers sBACH at Modified this Saturday. I advanced this concert in the paper this week (read here) so I won't recap it in full, but sBACH is a really interesting band... And a really interesting band with a built-audience of maybe four 8-bit gamers like me. So, I'm not even totally sure

  • sBACH Geeks Out at Modified Arts on Nov. 15

If you’re not attuned to such things, you might be surprised to know how big a niche there is for bands interested in playing covers of classic Nintendo game soundtracks in today’s geek-friendly world. At comic, gaming, and computing conventions bands like The Advantage and Phoenix’s own Minibosses can draw pretty well covering classic Castlevania songs. As any bar band will tell you though, doing originals is always harder, which is why sBACH played to a crowd of about 30 Saturday night at Modified Arts.

  • The Best Album of 2008? Sorry 'Science,' I Go With Girl Talk

Can an album comprised solely of samples really be an artistic achievement? Honestly, I'm a little bit torn about naming Girl Talk's Feed The Animals the best album of the year. After all, it is a record made up entirely of mashups, so, strictly speaking, there's not a note of new music in this banging 53-minutes club opus. But there is pretty much everything that's great about popular music, all tossed together into something joyously familiar yet excitingly new.So, while pretty much no one w

  • Fleet Foxes To Grace SNL's Music Stage

As reported on this past Friday, Fleet Foxes have been named the musical guest for this Saturday's episode of Saturday Night Live with host Rosario Dawson. Lorne Michaels booked the band to perform a week after sugary-sweet teen pop-star Taylor Swift graced the stage, ushering in the second time Fleet Foxes have been mentioned in the same breath with Ms. Swift in the past month. Saturday Night Live has always focused on bringing the newest, most relevant music to the masses, so their decision to

  • Long Live Logos Charm at Chyro Arts

Sometimes you just need to see a little live music on a Friday night, and without much on the concert schedule this weekend (The Music of Led Zeppelin - A Rock Symphony! Smashmouth!) I found myself at Chyro Arts in Scottsdale to see San Diego's Long Live Logos. Turns out, they played a delighful set at the art space/dry concert venue for a chilled out crowd that made itself cozy on the room's couches while the band shared their brand of slick, mellow, piano-pop.

  • Sony Ruins eMusic's Indie Credibility, Raises Rates

eMusic adds Sony and pisses off its indie rock-savvy clienteleThese troubling financial times call for belt-tightening across American society. We all know what's going on with the auto industry, and the record industry is not safe from this recession. As announced Monday, online music retailer eMusic -- one of the largest on the web -- made a deal with Sony Music Entertainment to feature Sony Music tracks through their service. eMusic, a New York-based company, has some 400,000 subscribers, gen

  • 2010 Early Releases -- Yeasayer, Vampire Weekend -- Shaping Up Quite Well

These fine young men call themselves Yeasayer and will have their sophomore album ready for February 2010Is it too early to look ahead to already announced albums with 2010 release dates? No, especially when those releases carry the clout of such bands as Vampire Weekend, Yeasayer and Arcade Fire. Vampire Weekend has already teased listeners with a track from their January 2010 LP Contra, "Horchata," while Yeasayer has announced the tracklist for their February release Odd Blood. Th

  • Q & A: Bishop Allen's Justin Rice Talks Punk, Being in Depeche Mode (sort of), and Puzzle Obsessions

Bishop Allen are a prim pop confectionary who churned out their third proper full-length last March titled "Grrr..." The candy-coated tracks are worth the impending toothaches, placing Bishop Allen, named for the street where the founding members lived, in cahoots with fellow saccharine rockers Vampire Weekend, Dirty Projectors and, Phoenix's own, Miniature Tigers. Stateside will present Bishop Allen at Modified Arts on Wednesday, Nov. 11, along with support from Darwin Deez and Futurekind.

  • This Just In: Brooklyn Has Own "Sound," Numerous Bands

Brooklyn has become a mecca of sorts for indie rock in the past decade, with numerous new bands emerging from its brownstone-lined streetsI was listening to Sirius XMU yesterday while driving with the air conditioning on, since it's a balmy November in the Valley. On came a song by new indie/psych rock band Bear in Heaven, "You Do You." I was enthralled by the song, not being bored as shit 30 seconds into as I am with most indie rock these days. I was instantly curious about this Bear in Heav
