  • Green Features Vegan "ThanksLiving" Menu

By Michele Laudig I've hosted vegetarian guests for Thanksgiving before, and let me tell you -- it is a challenge to come up with something tasty that isn't just a meatless side dish like green beans or mashed potatoes. Sadly, there's no room for tofurky in my oven when I'm already roasting a real bird. But the folks at Green definitely have it all figured out. This year, they're even opening the restaurant on the holiday for a special ThanksLiving dinner, from noon to 4 p.m. From seitan tu

  • Fresh Mint, Flaming Kabob, The Firehouse, and Others Offer Vegetarian Dining Options On Christmas Day

Spend Christmas Day feasting on the golden chicken and other vegetarian Asian delights at Fresh Mint in Scottsdale. Christmas Day dining options can be quite slim, considering the fact most restaurateurs and food workers would rather toast the yuletide with their nearest and dearest than sling hash to the hungry masses. For vegetarians and vegans, however, the choices are even slimmer. Green's gonna be closed, as will Fate, Carly's, and all seven Pita Jungle locations. All hope is not los

  • The Vegan Oven Serves Up Tasty Baked Goods That Are Animal Product-Free

Taryn Schaal, mistress of the Vegan Oven. The holidays are huge time for baked goods, whether you're munching on Christmas cookies made by co-workers or having your mom's spectacular rum cake. And thanks to the efforts of Taryn Schaal, local vegans and vegetarians can nosh on cupcakes that are just as tasty as the stuff you'd find at your neighboorhood bakery. For the past six months, the 25-year-old social worker (and occasional amateur pin-up model) has been cooking up a sweet selection o

  • Veggie Boy: Molly's Tamales

It's not really Christmas in Arizona without having a tamale or two.Wrapped in warm cornmeal dough and packed with such delicious fillings as cheese and chile peppers, tamales have long been the staple of many a Christmastime dinner table. Even for those who aren't of Hispanic origin, chances are they'll be polishing a tamale or two sometime over the next 48 hours or so. It results in big business for many local Hispanic restaurants, who'll advertise they have Christmas tamales for sale (inclu

  • Veggie Boy: Eden's Grill

Better make sure you're hungry before ordering Eden's Grill's Vegetarian Dish. This isn't exactly a shocking revelation, but you can't always believe what you read on the Internet sometimes. Like, say, if you were doing some online reconnoitering of Eden's Grill (13843 North Tatum Boulevard, 602-996-5149) before making the trek to the north Phoenix to sup on the Mediterranean bistro's succulent offerings. After reading this review (or perhaps this one as well) you might surmise that the proprie

  • Veggie Boy: The Breadfruit

The Breadfruit's "Vegan Special" will be Jamaican your mouth water. The Valley isn't exactly known for its Jamaican culture.Truth be told, there's a grand total of two restaurants around these parts that serve up cuisine straight from the tiny Caribbean isle that birthed Bob Marley and the Rastafari religion. It's quite a shame, frankly, because after taking just one bite of the irie edibles available at The Breadfruit, you'll wish we had Jamaican restaurants on every single street corner. Fl

  • New Downtown Eatery: Sapna's Cafe

If you've been to the Downtown Phoenix Public Market anytime in the last three years or so, chances are, you've encountered Anna Kletkke and her long-running food stand, Sapna Chill Out Cafe. Her tasty soups and salads have been a huge hit, especially since she's big on vegetarian options. Now you can enjoy Kletkke's cooking every day of the week, at her brand-new restaurant, Sapna's Cafe, which just opened yesterday. It's located on Grand Avenue (1301 NW Grand, 602-254-6726), in the

  • Cooking School Secrets: Cooking for Vegetarians/Vegans

I've lived with vegetarians. I even was one for a while. And I live with a vegan now. Cooking without meat doesn't faze me. But it elicits quite a negative response from many of my fellow students. I don't get it. So I'm getting on my soapbox. Chefs should be able to deal with all sorts of dietary requests. Too many vegetarians have been served baked potatoes and overcooked vegetable sides or plain pasta and marinara by chefs who wouldn't - or couldn't - take the time to prepare high-quality,

  • Monday Night Martha: Tomato Watermelon Soup

This is a slightly bizarre but delicious summer soup made of pureed watermelon and tomato. The soup is served cold and requires no cooking, so it'd make vegetarians, vegans and even the raw food crowd happy. The recipe comes from Epicurious by way of Self Magazine. Self says the soup serves up generous portions of the "skin-saving antioxidant lycopene." That sounds dandy enough but we decided to try it out because we were craving watermelon one hot day and randomly Googled "watermelon soup".

  • Three Roots Cafe Returns to the Tempe Scene

After a few months' hiatus, popular Mill Avenue coffeehouse Three Roots is back in business, under new ownership (it didn't go co-op after all). Besides a fresh coat of paint, new flooring, and other repairs, the bohemian spirit of the place remains the same. Even many of the same vegan and vegetarian dishes are being offered again, although the menu now also includes a few meat options (like a roast beef sandwich), and will continue to evolve as customers give their feedback. Current business

  • Campus Coffee: What Bugged Us About Next Coffee Co.

This week we spend some time at cafés near other campuses in the Valley. Today, we're featuring an ASU West campus coffee shop in Glendale with a couple of quirks. We're not ones to whine about coffee and pastries. We recognize a good thing when we see it, and Next Coffee Co. seemed like a pretty good thing. The café was spacious, cool, and has ample seating. Everything looked clean and pleasant, but as we approached the counter, the mildly obtrusive man working there kept pestering us to figure

  • The Naughty Vegetarian: Top Ten Fatty Meat-Free Foods

PETA caused some hullabaloo (shocker) a couple months back with a billboard posted in Jacksonville, Fla. that said "Save the Whales, Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian." The billboard had a picture of a heavy-set lady on the beach in a not-so-itsy-bitsy teenie-weenie pink polka-dot bikini. Really, PETA? Really?Understandably, issues were raised questioning PETA's sensitivity and compassion for the folks the billboard makes a jab at. However, our immediate reaction to the billboard was this
