  • 'The Heart is a Drum Machine' Draws Big, Loud Crowd For Premiere

The Voyager Golden Record, sent in to deep space with a selection of Earth's music, is an important part of the film. It's not often a movie with Elijah Wood, Juliette Lewis, George Clinton, Wayne Coyne and a host of other big names premieres in Phoenix, so it probably wasn't surprising that The Heart is a Drum Machine's opening at Phoenix Art Museum drew a huge crowd last night. Free wine from the Arizona winery owned by Tool's Maynard James Keenan didn't hurt either. Check out the trailer here.

We're pretty excited about The Flaming Lips at McDowell Mountain Music Festival this weekend. So excited, in fact, that we're having a little shindig tonight to pre-game for the show. It's our first tweetup (follow Phoenix New Times and me) but we're also promoting it here, in case you're not yet following New Times, which you definitely should be.Here's the deal: We're playing The Flaming Lips' obscure and oddball 1997 album Zaireeka at 8 p.m. at Yucca Tap Room on the southwester

Jonathan McNamaraSee more shots of The Flaming Lips in our slide show. Major labels get a lot of flack. Whether it's because they supposedly put out nothing but overly-commercialized crap, or because they're suing computer-using kids in a vain effort to salvage their busted business model, it's rare to hear anyone say anything nice about the Big Four. That's why Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne snagged my attention Saturday night when he made offhanded mention of his band's nearly two decades w

See more shots in our slide show from Pitchfork. As much as we wish it wasn't true, there's not a whole lot happening around these here parts. At least not as much as is happening in parts very North of The Valley. This weekend our brothers and sisters in the Village Voice Media family covered the hell out of Pitchfork in Chicago and Siren in New York. Now, my fellow Phoenicians, I s
