Number 33: Red chile beef at Verde

Verde, a newcomer to the downtown dining scene, is the kind of place where you don't need an excuse to swing by -- the food is scrumptious (just smell the air when you walk through the door), the atmosphere is easygoing, and the prices are tempting enough to turn any lover of Mexican food into a regular.

Handmade tortillas make every dish special, so in that sense, you can't really go wrong.

But if you're into spice, try the red chile beef, juicy shreds of meat infused with the rich, complex flavor of roasted chile.

It's hot, to be sure, but in a way that'll make you keep eating and eating . . . Thank heaven for those tortillas to gobble it up (and clean your plate), as well as fluffy, aromatic rice and smoky-sweet beans. And make sure you get a large agua fresca to refresh your palate before you go in for another bite. So, so tasty.
