From now 'til we publish the 2012 edition of Best of Phoenix, New Times and Chow Bella present 100 Tastemakers -- Valley residents who make the cut in our culinary scene. Some you'll know; for others, it'll be a first introduction (but likely not the last). While you're here, check out our 100 Creatives on Jackalope Ranch.
Today: The Valley's own designing woman.
Tastemaker 4: Cathy Hayes
As a child she rode her bike around Chicago, eating up the city's architecture and its wildly creative culinary environment. Tasting and touching other parts of America, Europe and Asia as a young adult, Cathy Hayes now hopes to inspire and entertain us with her architecture & interior design throughout the Valley of the Sun. Whether it's designing a family's home, a neighborhood restaurant, a corporate office or throughout many resort and hotel properties, Cathy leads her team at Hayes Architecture/Interiors to make metro Phoenix better looking.
I arrived in Phoenix with... curiosity and the commitment to make a positive difference through my love of design. That's all I had twenty-eight years ago when I arrived.
If I was sitting down to dinner for six, my five dream dining companions would be... that's hard, there are so many. Local folks would be Ken Kendrick, Eric Brown, Nate Nathan, Steve Vollmer, Mindy Korth and Ed Bull. I know that's six but... If I could fly folks to Phoenix it might be Jon Stewart, Bill Bryson, Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey and Maureen Dowd. All of these people make a difference and have my most required characteristic for a dining companion: a sense of humor.
One place everyone who comes to Phoenix must eat is... La Grande Orange so they know how we casually gather in community.
One menu item this city could do without is... chicken wings
My last meal in Phoenix would be... in a restaurant whose owners are committed to preparing super-interesting, health-focused, beautiful food in an environment my team and I design that perfectly complements the culinary focus and that inspires the staff to make the guest experience the best dining experience of their lives...every time they visit!
