16: Pork Taco Trio from Canteen Modern Tequila
The summer time blues are hitting us hard this year, to the point where it's even miserable to relax poolside. When this scorching version of seasonal affective disorder strikes, we head off to a cantina to beat the heat with ice cold Mexican beer and margaritas, where the only heat we'll meet is the spicy kick from a side of salsa. At Canteen on Mill Ave, we like to score a table during happy hour and laze the afternoon away with icy margs and their excellent achiote pork tacos.
Canteen's taco platters are half-price during happy hour, as are those icy cold margaritas we mentioned. Of all the menu offerings, it's the achiote pork tacos that keep us coming back for seconds, and maybe even thirds. (What can we say, they're tiny street tacos.) Two corn tortillas hold a mass of tender, achiote-braised pork that's been slow cooked to make it mouth-watering and tender. A mango habanero salsa tops these smoky pork tacos, adding sweetness and the perfect amount of heat--without making us sweat.
