Alaskan King Crab from Angry Crab Shack: 100 Favorite Dishes
Last year we marked the hundred day countdown to Best of Phoenix by sharing some of our favorite food folks' "Personal Best" lists. This year we're bringing back our list of 100 Favorite Dishes. 22. Alaskan King Crab from Angry Crab Shack
There are very few things worth as much work as excellent crab. It's just not an easy-to-enjoy food. You have get downright messy -- elbow deep in shells and sauce -- before you get the reward of a bite of tender meat. The time spent shucking usually outpaces the time spend eating.
And yet, we never have any regrets about wolfing down a pound of crab at Angry Crab Shack in Mesa. All the restaurant's seafood is memorable, but it's the crab that keeps us coming back for more.
The Cajun restaurant offers seafood by the pound, served in plastic bags to whatever heat level you desire. Beware, even the mild flavor can make you sweat -- and whatever you do, be sure to try the Trifecta sauce, a blend of lemon pepper, garlic and "Kajun." Before you know it you'll be dipping everything within arms reach in the stuff and probably spilling it all over your clothes.
A word to the wise: just put on the plastic bib.
