Brew Review: Samuel Adams' Coffee Stout and Blackberry Witbier
Two brews stepped up to the field of battle. One armed himself with the tastiness of the humble blackbeery while the other trained his dark coffee flavor on his opponent. In the end, only one would remain and that victor is none other than Samuel Adams' Blackberry Witbier.
Competing against Samuel Adams' Coffee Stout in the 2008 Beer Lover's Choice Campaign, Blackberry Witbier won with 60 percent of the vote and is available where Sam Adams is sold.
When I got a hold of two sample bottles of the two brews, I'd recreate the epic battle for brew supremecy. The result? Read on and find out.
Tastes: Not too sweet. Not too sour. A perfect balance of blackberry goodness. Blackberry Witbier has the same powerful fruit flavor as many of the lambics I've tried without going over the top. One of my fellow tasters remarked he would drink this every day.
Tastes: a little flat but full of flavor. This is quite simply delicious. There are better coffee-flavored stouts out there, but it's doubtful that they could compete with Samuel Adams price point or distribution range for that matter. I enjoyed the dark taste of this brew and appreciated that it remained smooth from when it first hits your tongue through to the end of each sip.
One of our New Times tasters said he could really go for a muffin after drinking this.
Verdict: There really is no contest. I loved the Blackbeery Witbier for its complex and subtle fruit flavors. The Coffee Stout was pretty damn good in its own right, but seemed flat compared to its fruity rival. Hail to the king, baby.
