Wenchell's and Krispy and Dunkin's! Oh my! Chain store donuts are sweet and fatty and yummy but they lack a certain je ne sais quoi. If you really want to impress your friends and show your sweeties that you love them, then next Sunday morning make your own donuts. Your friends and family will think you are magical.
Ingredients
1 Tube of Ready-Made Biscuits
Several cups of Canola or another light cooking oil
Chocolate frosting, sprinkles, sugar, cinnamon or whatever else you'd like to use to flavor and decorate the donuts
---
Pour the oil an inch or two deep into a large frying pan and heat over medium-to-high heat.
Open the tube of biscuits and separate them out onto a baking sheet or cutting board. Using an extra small round cookie cutter (or the cap from the bottle of oil), punch out holes from the center of the biscuits. These will be your donut holes. The rest of the biscuit is the donut.
By now, the oil should be hot, but just shy of smoking because you don't want the donuts to burn.
Sprinkle some water over the pan and if it sizzles, you're ready. Using tongs, slowly lower the raw dough into the scalding oil. Turn the donuts and donut holes after a minute or two. The donut holes will obviously take less time to cook.
Remove the donuts from the oil when they've turned golden on both sides. Using a kitchen towel or paper cloths, dry the oil off. Let them cool a little bit before frosting them.
Now's the fun part. Decorate your donuts any way you like. Try rolling the donut holes in a cinnamon sugar mix, or maybe powdered or granulated sugar. Coat the donuts with chocolate frosting, or make a maple glaze. Add sprinkles and serve with milk.
