Will Mexican cuisine do the trick?
Papi Chulo's Mexican Grill & Cantina just opened at the Clarion Hotel (5101 N. Scottdale Rd., Scottsdale), in the space that's featured Mediterranean food (Cezar's) and American-meets-the-world (Cafe Bistro Bar & Grill) over the last three years.
This particular part of town isn't overrun with Mexican spots, so perhaps Papi Chulo's offerings will bring more steady business than the place has seen lately.
What's on the menu?
A lot of things. Mexican street tacos, nachos, quesadillas, tostadas, ceviche, and salads are among the appetizers ($3 to $11.50), and entrees ($7 to $18) run the gamut from burritos and enchiladas to platters of chicken in mole sauce, pork in adobo sauce, arracherra (marinated, charbroiled flank steak), and shrimp sauteed in garlic, guajillo chile, and lemon juice.
For dessert, there's flan, sopapillas, crepes with cajeta, and a sundae called "Papi's Delight," with vanilla ice cream, fried plantains, condensed milk, chocolate syrup, Nutella, whipped cream, and strawberries in a tortilla bowl.
Papi Chulo's opens daily with a 3 p.m. happy hour and closes at 10 p.m. Call 480-543-1043 for more info.
