Spicy Chickpeas and Spinach at Lola Tapas
I'd been wanting to check out the new weekday lunch at Lola Tapas ever since it debuted a few months back, and it was worth my (unintentional) wait when I stopped by this week. The place is just close enough to downtown that I can justify repeat visits from time to time.
At night, the menu here is straight-up tapas, but in order to be more accomodating to the solo diner, the lunch selections come with a side salad.
For my "entree," I ordered the garbanzos con espinacas a la Andaluza, a delicious heap of chickpeas and sauteed spinach in a pleasantly spicy sauce, with golden, crispy bread crumbs on top.
The accompanying salad was lovely -- extremely fresh, tender greens, some Marcona almonds and dates, and a slice of Manchego, with balsamic dressing. A side dish of bread was $3 extra, but worth it -- especially for the bit of olive oil that was served with it.
I was also glad to have that bread to go with the soup of the day, "aromatic" chicken soup. It was a simple chicken and carrot concoction, but the beguiling scent of cinnamon made the broth special. I drank it all up, then took one last slurp of housemade almond horchata before heading back to the office.
Lola is always a highlight in my week, and I'm happy to have another excuse to go there.
