Taste Nimbus Brewing's A-1 Beer on First Friday

Have you ever come across old beer bottles and cans at antique stores? I've always loved looking at the labels of long-lost, once-ubiquitous regional brands, and often tried to imagine what they tasted like. What was beer culture like before the mega-brands took over? I get a little nostalgic for earlier times.

I'm not alone. The folks at Tucson's Nimbus Brewing Company have gone so far as to recreate an iconic, original Arizona beer that had been relegated to the history books.

A-1 pilsner, originally released in 1943 by the Arizona Brewing Company, was brewed by various companies until its last gasp in 1985. Now, the beer's being re-released, and you can get a taste of it tomorrow night, during First Friday festivities.

Along with the free tasting of this blast-from-the-past brew, there's a special one-night art exhibition by local photographer William LeGoullon, "A-1 Country," which explores the history of the beer. There will be local DJs spinning tunes as well.

The event takes place from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Icehouse, 427 W. Jackson. Bottoms up!
