This weekend Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone finally closed Tent City, former Sheriff Joe Arpaio's notorious open-air jail, for good, just months shy of its 25th anniversary. In February 2015, photographer
Deanna Dent toured the facility along with Humphrey Scholars from the Cronkite School of Journalism and University of Minnesota. According to Dent, the groups on the tour, led by Arpaio, "comprised journalists, human rights advocates, lawyers, judges, and law enforcement officials from a plethora of different countries, and they were able to listen to Sheriff Arpaio talk about his approach to law enforcement and address everything from his religion to his human rights record." Here's some of what she saw that day.
