Let the battle begin! The weapons -- rattan rods with blunt-covered edges -- may not kill, but they'll leave a mark.

More than 6,000 Rennassiance enthusiasts gathered in the Kingdom of Atenveldt for the annual faux-war week, which ended Feb. 17.

We went for the first time this year to spectate on Saturday, and man, what a great experience that was. Ren fair is nice, but everything there has a real 'performance' feel to it - not so at the Estrella War. The combat is brutal, and the kinship these folks feel for each other is visibly evident everywhere you look. Can't recommend the experience enough, especially for families. We'll be there again next year!

Huzzah! Finally, the REAL medieval event gets some coverage. Maybe next year, you guys can do a full-page spread on US, instead of the "just in it for the money" crowd at the Ren Fair. Anyone who wants to know what life was REALLY like in the Middle Ages, come out to a fighter practice or other event. For more info, go to either www.sca.org or www.atenveldt.org.
