you guys suck with your smart-ass (but lame) captions for the phish shows. this was about MUSIC, not pot. also, if you don't get the beauty of phish, you're really missing out....go watch your football game and listen to your kenny g.

Your comments about each photo suck and don't even make any sense. I guess that's what happens when you have a 12 year old write for you.

Why not just not write an article if all you’re going to do is bash what you seem to have no comprehension of at all outside of your freedom to write what you want, why not collect some factual information before you make snap judgments. The other great thing about having our freedoms is if you don't like something you don't have to listen to it, look at and you certainly don't HAVE to write about it.

I am NOT a hippy, and there were PLENTY of people there that also are not hippies. Kinda crappy for a journalist to lump EVERYBODY that was there (out of something like 60,000 people) into one small minded category. Way to make yourself look like a closed-minded idiot.
And by the way, the real hippies are nice. There are plenty that put on a front. You are entitled to your own opinion. You just make yourself look stupid when you go out of your way to insult the people who went there to enjoy the actual music.

What a great article. What unbelievably creative and insightful writer puts Phish in the same sentence as pot? Of the 48 pictures you took, you gave absolutely no insight into the concert itself. Isnt that the point of Journalism, to tell a story? Hopefully your photo skills can get you through your chosen profession. I doubt it though, have you ever heard of a wide shot?

I agree with everyone else. Whoever writes captions for this should not have a biast opinion about how everyone is a "hippie" and all that is there is "pot" and more "pot. I thought in newspaper school you learn about how to not sterotype and express your own worthless opinion in comments on pictures..
oh and just because someone has hair longer than yours doesn't mean they are a "hippie"

Its obvious from the comments that you don't get a lot of things about this festival. Now you are an authority on art too ?

Pretty weak photo descriptions. Unbiased journalism? The writer was either upset they had to work the gig or voted Palin/McCain. Two predictions: The author of the descriptions will be out of work by the New Year and this online rag will be bankrupt by the end of 2010.

The guy who wrote this article also wrote a terrible review for the Kings of Leon show earlier this year. He is clearly a terrible journalist and has no grasp of music. He just goes to shows and picks out anything he can be negative about.

I was at the festival. What a great event! I would advise New Times to fire Martin Cizmar as his work is terrible and he lacks any and all credibility (twice now I have attended a great show and then had to read his negtive review). This guy doesn't know anything about music but somehow gets to attend the event only to insult the band and it's fans in his review.

Hey Martin, do us all a favor and go to the next death metal show and call the fans names like "sissy" and "pansy" while your at the show. This will hopefully prevent you writing any future reviews.

I do have to admit I sorta resent you lumping what I did here together with what I did at that Kings of Leon show. I didn't actually say this was a bad show -- it wasn't. I just gently teased Phish's fans for being a bunch of hippies (they are) and I'm honestly a little surprised they can't laugh about it more easily.

Kings of Leon, on the other hand, are a bad band who put on a TERRIBLE show in Mesa. Honestly, just thinking about it I'm embarrassed for them. Phish fans, while definitely a little worthy of some jokes, are way, WAY too sophisticated for that sort of jackassery. Please don't connect the very positive experience of seeing Phish and joking around about their fans in a photo essay with the awful night I spent suffering through that bullshit KOL show. Ugh.

I seriously don't understand all the negativity behind these comments. I've been attending Phish shows for the past 15 years and I certainly do not consider myself a "hippy" nor do I smoke pot. Your overuse of this word to describe phish fans is immature and uninformed...As are the rest of your comments. Gimme a break already!

Before you make these ridiculously uneducated statements, you should take the time to learn something about the subjects of your photos. You work for a news publication and your ignorant, stereotypical view of the weekend only proves that you had no place being there.

These comments are ridiculously out of line. Trey and Mike are not God-like leaders of some hippie cult. They are incredible musicians and people who have established something that brings a lot of people joy. Be ashamed of yourself Phoenix Times your reporting is so shallow and stereotypical it hardly brings credibility to your publication.

I was 7 when Jerry died. I loved the Grateful Dead then and always will. So, Martin, if you were trying to make a snarky-ass remark about my being too young to appreciate Jerry and GD, nice try.
