World Championship Hoop Dance Contest at the Heard Museum, 2/9/14

The Heard Museum hosted the 24th Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest this past weekend, February 8 and 9. A sacred and healing ceremony for various American Indian nations, its purpose is to restore balance to the world. It is not usually done as a public exhibition, however, at the Heard Museum the Hoop Dance contest is a display of colorful and unique dress. The dancers performed various moves to represent the circle of life, making images with the hoops to represent animals, insects, and nature. There were four divisions to perform: youth, teens, adults, and seniors.
