The Sugar Thieves:
Formerly known as “The Mikel Lander & Meridith Moore Band,” The Sugar Thieves resurrect Rhythm and Blues from barely breathing on life-support to doing jumping jacks in rapid succession. One listen to this group, especially the track “Wade in The Water,” and singing along is not only logical, it’s innate. Meridith Moore has a sweet bluesy voice, not heard much since the ‘70s, which contrasts extremely well with Mikel Lander’s raspy, worked-to-the-bone vocals. From soothing melodies to rhythmic refrains, The Sugar Thieves bring old band standards, like an upright bass and a killer saxophone, to the modern age with a personal twist. These 2008 Arizona State Blues Competition champs are sure to please the desert’s ears. If B.B. King and Billie Holiday had a musical offspring, The Sugar Thieves would be that jazzy love-child.
