To local playwright James E. Garcia, the long, narrow stretch of land that separates the United States and Mexico has never been two-dimensional. You watch the looped videos of immigrants jumping over the fence, or listen to very similar reports from the borderlands on the radio, he says, but there are other stories that need to be seen and heard.
With this goal in mind, Garcia set out with local poet and border native Alberto Rios to tell the story of Amexica: Tales of the Fourth World. The show, which takes the stage at Mesa Arts Center, tells the story of an aspiring poet who goes on a journey to find his roots in a Nogales orphanage. He travels from San Diego Bay to the Gulf of Mexico to discover a region of heritage and culture. Amexica is directed by Dr. Barbara Acker and features music by hip-hop and Latin composer Quetzal Guerrero with choreography by Michele Ceballos, founder of Opendance.
