As Valentine's Day approaches, you can show your special someone (or simply yourself) the sights around town without seeing negatives in your bank account. From comedy shows and poetry slams to historic car showcases, there are plenty of free events happening in downtown Phoenix. Here are our top three picks.

First Friday Comedy
When you've finished checking out the new art exhibitions on Friday, February 6, head to Lawn Gnome Publishing for some late night laughs brought to you by S&M Comedy. First Friday Comedy will start at 10 p.m. and feature the fresh material of local comics Kirsten Alberts, Josh Graves, Durrell Johnson, Ernesto Moncada, and Brian Vilona. Downtown Poetry Slam
Think you have a way with words? Then prove it as The Firehouse Gallery hosts the Downtown Poetry Slam. The verse vs. verse event will begin at 9:30 p.m. with signups starting at 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 7. Interested participants should bring original material under three minutes. The slam, which will be handled by scorekeeper Rosemarie Jeana, will be broken down into three rounds, moving from 12 poets to six poets, and then three. The winner will take home bragging rights. Motoring Thru Time
Heritage Square is turning 35 and to celebrate, it's revving the engine of automobiles past. The historic happening runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, February 7. The all-ages affair will give visitors the chance to view vintage cars, trucks, motorcycles, and muscle cars as well as enjoy live music, free cake, and free entrance into the grand opening of the Stevens House exhibit, "Phoenix Re:Imagined." While admission is complimentary, guests are encourage to bring one or two cans of food to donate to the St. Mary's Food Bank. More information can be found at heritagesquarephx.org.
