Think downtown after dark is black and white and dead all over? Not this Friday, January 23, when "COLORS . . . 002" coats the Old Brickhouse Grill in creativity. A collaboration between Terrence O'Connor and Mark Chai -- both working DJs -- the COLORS series pools the talents of local artists with the tunes of DJs from around the U.S. and the Valley. "There is an alternative to the typical nightclub experience," Chai says. "COLORS . . . 002 will provide art and house music for people from many walks of life."
Indianapolis-based music producer and DJ Slater Hogan is set to spin at the series' second installment, along with El Paso's DJ Alby and local DJ David Siefert. Artworks by Sean Ross, Jeana Klein, Glen Allen and Shauna Thibault lend local COLORS. For party people 21 and older, COLORS runs from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Grill, 1 East Jackson. Admission is $7. West side poets flow
Sat 1/24 Last year's debut of the West Side Poetry Jam was no small-time campus activity at ASU West. Faculty and members of the Valley's artistic community got really involved, too. "The response was so overwhelmingly positive that we said we had to do it again," says Jeff Kennedy, artistic director of the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance. Kennedy says the poets perform in "a real Def Poetry Jam setup" at the intimate Kiva Lecture Hall, 4701 West Thunderbird. DJ Dark Vader and the band NuGruv provide musical entertainment. It's a fun way to wrap up ASU West's MLK Week, Kennedy says, not only because the hip-hop genre has so many African-American poets, but also because "it has a natural celebratory tone mixed with an ability to talk about issues."
