Corey Gaines must have insulted a fortune-teller during the off-season. The Phoenix Mercury coach has had a run of bad luck that started when forward Penny Taylor -- one of the Mercury’s two star players -- went down with a season-ending knee injury in April. It got worse when Diana Taurasi -- the other star player -- suffered a strained left hip flexor that has her on the IL for an indefinite period of time. Because of its injury-ridden roster, the Mercury has hobbled its way to one of the worst records in the league.
Only adding to the Mercury’s rotten luck is a visit from the defending champion Minnesota Lynx. While a game against the seemingly unstoppable Lynx could get ugly for the Mercury, it may also be the team’s chance to turn their luck around at US Airways Center.
