To prepare for a summer spent feeling as though you’re wasting your life, there’s nothing like seeing a play about people who spend the summer feeling as though they’re wasting their lives: Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. If you’ve always thought of it as a feel-good romp -- who doesn’t like a good uncle? -- it’s time to think again. (Chekhov’s work does contain genuine humor, actually, but his characters tend toward the miserable, deluded side.)

Charlie Steak, who wrote and directed the viral video I’m Voting Republican for the Synthetic Human film collective, has adapted the script to a contemporary setting, but themes like disillusionment in one’s family and/or career, falling in love with the wrong people, and expecting things to either change or stay the same (and being wrong no matter what) were already timeless.
