Cook's Tour

The role of fat-then-skinny diet spokesperson has drawn into its calorie-counting clutches such illustrious plus-size players as sex-tape stars, actresses in need of a career boost, and pop star royalty. Just off the top of our heads, we have Kirstie Alley, Jennifer Hudson, Kim Kardashian, and Carnie Wilson. Sometimes the pounds drop and sometimes -- to tabloid glee -- they don’t.

Former teen TV star Valerie Bertinelli (One Day at A Time) falls into the “results not typical” category, shedding 50 pounds in her ongoing stint as a Jenny Craig adherent. Now, she’s translated that lifestyle change into the cookbook One Dish at a Time: Delicious Recipes and Stories from My Italian-American Childhood and Beyond. It’s full of comfort foods and pointers for chowing down without pigging out.
