Field of Dreamers

Pitcher Jose Rosario doesn’t have his own baseball card -- at least, not yet. Nor does he have multimillion dollar endorsement deals, a savvy sports agent, or legions of fans. Such trappings are the stuff of far-off dreams, as the 20-year-old Puerto Rican right-hander is at the dawn of his career as a prospect for the Chicago Cubs.

Rosario is among the burgeoning baseball players competing in the annual Arizona League, which celebrates its opening day this week and features rookies sharpening their skills during summertime games at Valley ballparks over the summer in the hopes of someday making it to the majors.

Rosario and the rest of the Arizona League Cubs, a minor league affiliate of the storied Chicago franchise, will play against the farm team from the San Francisco Giants at Fitch Park, 160 East Sixth Place in Mesa, on Monday, June 20. It’s one of five games that will take place during the league’s opening day.
