5. The Avengers You can stop biting your nails now. Set up through years of successive superhero flicks, Joss Whedon's The Avengers finally crashes into theaters on Friday, May 5.

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) assembles the action ensemble, composed of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, to combat villain Loki (Thor's adopted brother, played by Tom Hiddleston) and save Earth from his Nordic jerkness.

The superheroes swing into action with a wide release on Friday, May 4.

4. 2 Days in New York Well, spoiler alert. Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts' sneak-peek film series Talk Cinema will bring Julie Delpy's romantic drama 2 Days in New York, which stars Delpy and Chris Rock, to the screen before its theatrical release. Get an early look at the movie at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 8. Moderated discussion will follow. Admission is $19, and discounts are available when buying ticket packages and for students.3. This American Life Live! Ira Glass and his band of superstar storytellers will perform a live version of This American Life with special appearances from David Sedaris, Tig Notaro, and OK Go; plus a documentary from Mike Birbiglia and assorted surprises. The catch? It's happening in New York. The phew? You can see it live in movie theaters locally the same day. See the show at 8 p.m. on May 10 at CineMark 16, AMC Ahwatukee 24, AMC Desert Ridge 18, and AMC Westgate 20. Adult tickets are $20.

2. Gidget The O.G. of beach party films, Gidget embodies the burgeoning sexuality and heavy-handed wholesomeness that swirled around the 1950s. The romp stars Sandra Dee who earns the nickname Gidget from surfer boys during summer vacay and falls for a beach bum called Moondoggie. The movie screens at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 13, at Phoenix Art Museum in conjunction with exhibition "The Sea," which is on view in the Ellman Fashion Design Gallery through Sunday, July 15.

1. Lights! Camera! Dance! CONDER/dance and No Festival Required will pair up to host an evening of dance-centric short films, including documentaries and experimental formats.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movies start up at 7 at Phoenix Center for the Arts on Monday, May 21. Admission is $6.
