Frame of Reference

As camera prices drop and YouTube continues making stars, the definition of filmmaker morphs and evolves. Sure, Ninja Cat isn’t held in the same critical esteem as Holly Golightly’s tabby in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, anyone with a camera phone and an eye for entertainment can create the next million-hit meme.

But it’s not so simple. Attracting an audience is tough enough, and charging them to watch your vids seems outlandish. It’s a challenge, and digital filmmaker Jon Reiss knows it. His body of work includes documentaries about graffiti art and rave culture, as well as music videos for Nine Inch Nails.

Reiss will give a free lecture, Thinking Outside the Box Office, on the dos and don’ts of moviemaking, marketing, and distribution in the digital age at on Tuesday, February 21, The Lyceum Theatre.

Tue., Feb. 21, 4:30 p.m., 2012
