Everyone knows that Independence Day falls on the Fourth of July. But there’s a different kind of freedom that’s celebrated on June 19. Juneteenth is a commemoration of the spreading of the news of the abolition of slavery in 1865, specifically in the state of Texas and generally throughout the United States.

Here to help celebrate this historic emancipation, the Tempe History Museum is teaming up with the African American Advisory Committee to host a (just barely) belated Juneteenth event. This all-ages community gathering will feature period costumes, a poetry slam, stepping, live music, performing arts, soul food, a recipe exchange, and special performance by Grammy award-winning gospel artist Daniel Winans. The Juneteenth Celebration kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, Jun 20, inside the Tempe History Museum, 809 East Southern Avenue. Admission is free for this all-ages event. For details, visit tempe.gov or call 480-350-5100.
