Its hard to think of a local business circa 1938 that wasnt the Arizona Biltmore or Goldwaters Department Store, but a few mustve existed to service the 12 people who lived here prior to the advent of air-conditioning. We bet all of those sun-blistered natives made beelines to Berridge Nurseries, which opened in the depth of the Depression but went on to thrive for seven decades -- partially, were sure, because the place traffics in actual green things. Things with flowers. Leaves. No spines.
The plant emporium celebrates its 70th birthday with its annual Art in the Garden event featuring an exhibit/sale of local art, Bonsai Society demos, food tastings, and kids activities.
