Few things are hotter than Phoenix in the summertime. Saunas. Microwave ovens. Satan's attic. The heat just kind of sucks the life out of you. By the time you get home in the evening, you just want to stay indoors and relax, says Emmett Potter, co-owner of Scottsdale's Soyal Gallery.
In response to fleeing snowbirds and skyrocketing mercury, the gallery is presenting Melt Down!, an exhibit of cool works. More than 30 artists are featured, including vinyl toy artist Mark Nagata, Ugly Dolls creator David Horvath, and gallery partner Spencer Hibert, who plans to carve ice sculptures during the reception.
How's that going to work when it's hot enough to fry an egg outside? We are going to keep him locked up down at Soyal all month, surrounded by mounds of dry ice and Igloo coolers, slaving away in a parka, says Potter. Not really! Once the pieces melt, more than likely that night, they are done.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: July 2. Continues through Aug. 12, 2010
