Depending on your perspective, Incubus was either the last big alternative band of the '90s or the first big post-alternative act of the 2000s. Make Yourself, the band's 1999 release, launched them into radio-dominating superstardom, featuring enough concessions to the burgeoning nu-metal scene to fit in with System of a Down and Papa Roach, but more firmly rooted in classic alternative sounds like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the populist prog rock of Rush. Singer Brandon Boyd's studly good looks didn't hurt, making him the crush of swooning rocker chicks all over the world. The band's new album, If Not Now, When?, follows Boyd's first solo foray, The Wild Trapeze. The record is pretty much The Brandon Boyd Show: Part Two — poppier and lighter in tone than previous Incubus releases, and firmly focused on the smoldering looks and sounds of Boyd. Fans of the band's funky, alt-metal days have decried the album, but it's worth a second listen. It's still a pleasure to hear the band's captivating rhythms and that beautiful, commanding voice of Boyd's.
